New York Yankee Legend Yogi Deserves a Great Spring Every Year

Benny PasqualeMar 6, 2009

That face smiling in that picture—that's what baseball is supposed to be about. That baseball hero's part-time job was being on the Normandy beaches for D-Day in World War II.

There's a guy that, every time I see him , memories of my Dad come back and all I can do is smile.

When you think about Yogi Berra and Ted Williams, we're talking about the kind of heroes in sports that aren't around anymore.

Pat Tillman would've fit in that era, but nobody else's name comes to mind.

I'll admit, I'm as guilty as any SOB now talking about how tough things are. This country is in a battle the likes of which I've never seen before. People are worried about their jobs, about keeping their homes, retirement, corporate greed, and the scum bags taking advantage of tough times to rip us off.

You start to wonder if things really can get any worse.

Yankees fans, meanwhile, are also worried about scandals, players' health, and what this player said about that player.

It all seems like such a big deal until you look up and see the smile on Yogi's face, and the joy this great game and this legendary team still brings him. Here is a guy that was in the water for 10 straight days being fired upon during WWII as he watched his comrades die.

He saw and dealt with the worst side of humanity and yet, each Spring, this hero of our country and baseball legend can find joy in seeing this great game return.

Things are tough for pampered punks like us, but we'll get through this.

So, let's play two for Yogi and let him celebrate the joys of Spring that he fought so bravely for as he represented all of us and our freedom to enjoy the great game of baseball.
