Best St. Louis Cardinals Reliever Mustache (Contestant No. 1)
Earlier today, we announced the exciting debut of “The Monthly Mustache Shakedown” —where we’ll feature four consecutive weeks of prominent mustache entries into defined mustache categories. After the fourth week, we’ll ask you—the fine readers of JoeSportsFan—to vote for your favorite upper lip sweater of the distinguished bunch. The winner will be granted ultimate JoeSportsFan mustache mortality. There’s no greater prize on Earth.
This month’s category: Best St. Louis Cardinals Reliever Mustache
We commence the first mustache battle royal with, none other than, the “Mad Hungarian,” Al Hrabosky.

Hrabosky spent the 1970-77 seasons in St. Louis coming out of the pen, and it’s hard to find a story about the Mad Hungarian that does not reference his menacing lip curtain. His best season came in 1975, when he went 13-3 with 22 saves and, his dynamic Fu Manchu style cookie duster was credited with eight of those wins and 17 of his saves.
His mouth brow also vaulted him into the finals of the American Mustache Institute’s 2007 “Greatest Sports Mustache” contest. The contest was ultimately won by another former Cardinals player, Keith Hernandez, but Hrabosky finished a strong third in the voting.
So there it is: for the first contestant of the “Best St. Louis Cardinals Relievers Mustaches”, we trot out the immensely lip-sweatered “Mad Hungarian” Al Hrabosky.
