Week 4 Sleepers: WRs Bound for Big Performances

Jessica MarieJun 3, 2018

This season, it has become impossible to predict who will come up big in any given week and who's going to falter.

Not through any fault of the players, of course.

In what might have been the craziest three weeks of any NFL season, we've seen some receivers come out of nowhere to put up huge numbers, and we've barely remembered that others are still in the league.

But there's still time for some of those quiet ones to make an impact. Here are some wide receivers to keep your eyes on this Sunday.

WR Malcom Floyd (San Diego Chargers)
vs. Kansas City

Floyd has been up and down through three games this season. On the plus side, he has one game in which he registered 100-plus yards; on the downside, he hasn't yet gotten more than six receptions, and he only has one touchdown to his name.

The Chargers are still working out the kinks with this offense. As as they do, Floyd should continue to get more looks from Philip Rivers purely due to experience and familiarity.

Kansas City allows an average of 225 passing yards per game, and as Rivers' prime target, Floyd should be able to put up some good numbers—and possibly even a touchdown—against a team that allows 33 points each time out.

WR Brandon Lloyd (New England Patriots)
at Buffalo Bills

At the moment, there are two certainties as far as the Patriots are concerned: One is that they are on the warpath in the aftermath of Sunday's controversial loss to the Ravens. Another is that they've already played their most difficult game of the season, and it's all smooth sailing from here.

Hopefully, for the sake of this offense, that means good things for Brandon Lloyd as well. The receiver was brought aboard this offseason with the hopes that he'd become Tom Brady's new No. 1 guy, and thus far, he ranks first on the team in receptions—but he's still only had one really good game in terms of yardage, and he has yet to catch a touchdown.

Fortunately, the road gets easier for the Patriots from here, and in Week 5, they're heading off to face a divisional opponent that they rarely, rarely lose to. Plus, they're up against a team with the No. 17-ranked defense in the nation, which allows almost 250 passing yards per game.

WR Jeremy Maclin (Philadelphia Eagles)
vs. New York Giants

This is a huge game for each side, and both offenses are going to play accordingly.

One thing we learned from the Eagles' atrocious 27-6 loss to Arizona on Sunday was that this passing offense is struggling. Perhaps Michael Vick is trying to be more conservative on account of the fact that he's thrown six interceptions thus far, or maybe he just doesn't have a good level of comfort with his receiving corps at this point.

And that's where Maclin comes in. The wideout is reportedly expected to play against New York after missing the last game with a hip injury, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Vick can be expected to utilize him accordingly. This pass offense only got 182 yards against the Cardinals on Sunday, and it didn't score a singe point until five minutes were left in the third quarter.

That's not going to fly against the Giants, owners of the league's second-best passing offense. The Eagles need to keep up, and Vick can be expected to come out aggressive. Maclin could very well be his partner in crime.
