NFL Replacement Officials: Overwhelmed Referees Will Only Get Worse

Patrick ClarkeJun 7, 2018

It took three weeks, but it finally happened.

The replacement officials' poor judgment during the waning moments of Monday night's game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks finally cost a team a meaningful game.

A series of missed and blown calls on the final play of the game awarded the Seahawks an unjust 14-12 win over the Packers, sending Seattle to 2-1 and Green Bay to 1-2.

Despite the replacement referees hitting rock bottom on Monday Night Football, the calls won't look or get any better. The NFL is simply too fast and mighty for officials whose judgment wasn't good enough to land them a job in Division I college football.

Regardless of whether they deserve blame for their incompetence, they're in over their heads and it shows play after play, game after game, week after week.

The tragedy in Seattle is but the leading highlight after three weeks for these unprepared, under-qualified officials who aren't cut out for their current day jobs.

In life, the people who succeed most often are those who have great judgment. It doesn't matter how intelligent you are. If you don't have excellent judgment, you will struggle. That's what we are seeing week after week around the NFL.

These replacement refs have failed to demonstrate good judgment on the football field, and that's why they aren't the ones being locked out right now. Sure, they are doing the best they can in the situation they have been put in, but their best isn't even close to good enough.

It's embarrassing and the NFL should be ashamed.

There have been countless mistakes and episodes of poor judgment from these replacements since the regular season began on September 5, and anyone who attempts to justify it by acknowledging that everyone makes mistakes is flat out wrong.

Teams only get 16 meaningful games in a season, and the Packers just had one taken away. Disgraceful.

This madness won't change or end anytime soon, until the locked-out officials return and good judgment is restored.
