Updated New York Jets' Season Outlook with Darrelle Revis out for the Year

Chris TrapassoJun 3, 2018

Rex Ryan is dejected.

Darrelle Revis, his star cornerback, the heart and soul of the New York Jets defense, is out for the year.

The team's head coach announced the somber injury news to the media this morning, and a tweet from ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter all but made it official:

Darrelle Revis: torn ACL. Done for year.

So much of what the Jets are capable of as a defense is directly related to Revis' uncanny ability to play amazingly stingy defense against the opponent's best receiver and effectively shut down one side of the field in passing situations.

Ryan has said that on numerous occasions.

Without him, New York will undeniably have to make personnel and schematic adjustments on the defensive side of the ball to compensate for the devastating loss.

Upon the release of this news, Antonio Cromartie is the Jets' new No. 1 cornerback. He's a rangy athlete and can be a stingy cornerback, but inconsistent play has been his most glaring issue for most of his career.

Former first-round pick Kyle Wilson, a guy who looked to be maturing as the Jets' nickel corner, will now assume outside cornerback duties.

He too has natural talent, but like Cromartie, he's victimized more often than New York would like.

Safe to say, the current situation in the secondary is far from ideal.

ESPN's Stats and Info department sent out this telling statistic, one in which all fans should be aware when thinking about the Jets moving forward without Revis:

"

Jets CB Darrelle Revis (torn ACL) is out for the season. NYJ has allowed a 73.8 comp pct with Revis off the field the past 2 seasons

— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) September 24, 2012"

Scary for the Jets.

However, don't instantly assume New York will fall on its face without Revis.

Ryan's an exceptionally intelligent and creative defensive mind. If anyone can field a productive defense after losing a player of Revis' caliber, it's Ryan. Well, Ryan or Dick Lebeau.

During his media session, Ryan was quoted by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News saying "maybe we'll play opponents differently," but a quote obtained by the Jets' beat reporter and tweeted a few minutes later was much more interesting:

"

Rex Ryan on whether Jets defense will be less aggressive without Revis: "We may be more aggressive." #nyj

— Manish Mehta(@MMehtaNYDN) September 24, 2012"

Even with Ryan's defensive genius calling the shots, there will be hiccups for the remainder of the year, lots of hiccups.

A coach can only do so much.

With a healthy Revis, and after an win over the Dolphins in Week 3, the Jets looked to be a team that had a legitimate chance to silence the preseason critics and make a run at the postseason.

A record between 8-8 and 10-6 didn't seem out of the question.

Without their star, finishing 9-7 would be incredible. Ending the year 8-8 seems more reasonable. Yes, that's how much of a ripple effect the loss of Revis should have on this Jets' squad.

They're defense simply won't be as effective as a collective unit for the remainder of the year.

Then again, as the NFL clearly reminded us in Week 3, anything is possible.
