Week 3 NFL Picks: Predicting the Biggest Upsets

Mike MoraitisMay 31, 2018

Week 3 of the NFL season will see some interesting matchups that are sure to produce an upset.

Let's take a look at some of this week's game that fit the bill.

St. Louis Rams(W) Vs. Chicago Bears (L)

Chicago got a beat down at the hands of the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, 23-10. While the score might not allude to the actual result, the stats certainly don't lie.

Quarterback Jay Cutler had one of the worst games of his career after throwing four interceptions while gaining a measly 126 yards through the air. On top of that, Cutler was sacked seven times and the Packers effectively exposed the weak offensive line of the Bears.

In Week 1, St. Louis picked off Matthew Stafford three times and held the Detroit Lions' explosive offense in check for the first three quarters of that game. It was only in the fourth quarter that Detroit put up 14 of their 27 points.

In Week 2, the Rams gave Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins fits. Not only did they force RG3 to throw his first interception of the season, they also put a ton of pressure on the rookie quarterback that would have led to numerous sacks if not for the special athleticism of Griffin III.

If Cutler continues his poor play, he won't be able to hide it against the Rams' defense.

Sam Bradford has also seen a vast improvement in his play so far this season. Finally getting some time to throw the ball, Bradford has flashed his skills to the fullest extent and has helped give credibility to the Rams' passing attack.

If the Bears don't put pressure on Bradford, he will pick apart their 21st-ranked pass defense much like he did against the Redskins last week. Combine that with the fact that St. Louis will bring the heat on Chicago's weak offensive line and this game has all the makings of an upset.

Green Bay Packers (L) Vs. Seattle Seahawks (W)

The Seahawks are coming off an impressive win in Week 2 that saw them shut down the Dallas Cowboys on the defensive end, while showing some skill on the offensive side.

Quarterback Russell Wilson proved he can play in this league after going 15-of-20 for 151 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Marshawn Lynch was unstoppable with 26 carries for 122 yards and a score.

This week, Seattle will be squaring off against a defense in Green Bay that can't stop the run. Lynch should be able to get his yards on the ground and while the Packers have a tough pass defense, the necessity of having to stop a talented back like Lynch will open things up for Wilson.

On the flip side, the Packers have not been able to move the ball on the ground which is nothing new for this team. Green Bay has the 27th-ranked rushing attack in the NFL while Seattle is ranked second against the ground and pound.

The Seahawks will have no problem shutting down the Packers' run game and that will make it much tougher for Aaron Rodgers to move the ball through the air.

Being a one-dimensional offense, the Packers won't be able to keep the Seahawks' defense honest and that will allow Seattle to play the pass more effectively, taking away the only dangerous element of Green Bay's offense.

Without a consistent passing attack, the Packers will have nothing to lean on offensively. That will make this a defensive matchup for the most part and that doesn't bode well for Green Bay.

Arizona Cardinals (W) Vs. Philadelphia Eagles (L)

Philadelphia has gotten past their first two opponents with victories, but not in impressive fashion. They squeaked by the Cleveland Browns in Week 1, 17-16, and then won by a single point once again in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens, 24-23.

Michael Vick has gotten off to a bad start with three touchdowns to six interceptions. Vick has done his best to hand opposing teams wins, but he can't expect to keep winning games while playing so poorly.

Arizona has been a huge surprise thus far in 2012. A 2-0 start is the last thing people expected, but that's football.

The Cards have brought their defense to the field during the first two games of the season, allowing a combined total of 34 points against the Seahawks and normally potent New England Patriots. On top of that, Kevin Kolb is coming off a solid game that should give him confidence moving forward.

Arizona has the 11th-ranked pass defense in the NFL and is by far the best Philly has seen this season. If Vick is throwing the ball away to lesser pass defenses, there's no doubt the Cardinals will have their chances to force turnovers.

If they can take Vick out of the game through the air, the Cards can focus on stopping the Eagles' rushing attack. That will help Arizona keep the Eagles offense in check overall.

Philly continues to play close games, giving their opponents extra chances to beat them. That's a dangerous way to play and the Eagles can't expect to keep winning like that for the rest of the season.

The Cards have the defense to keep this game low-scoring and close, making it the ideal situation for Arizona to pull off a major upset against Philadelphia.
