Sergio Martinez a Lock to Defeat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Jeremy HerrigesJun 7, 2018

It is no surprise that Sergio Martinez is favored to defeat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in their fight scheduled for Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nev.

Some might contemplate placing a bet on the underdog Chavez Jr. because he boasts an undefeated record, but I would strongly caution anyone from making this mistake.

HBO’s popular fight series 24/7 recently broadcast its second installment covering the build-up to Martinez vs. Chavez Jr., and it represented Chavez Jr. in a very negative light.

During this episode, Chavez Jr. missed a scheduled workout with Freddie Roach and seemed to engage in impromptu workouts that lacked organization and enthusiasm. This episode made him appear overconfident and lazy.

I understand that television series' such as this one try to build up drama through editing, but this appeared to be a damning indictment on Chavez Jr.’s preparation habits, or lack thereof.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has a reputation for poor training routines, evidenced by his necessity for drastic weight cuts before fights. This fight appears to be no exception.

Sergio Martinez, on the other hand, has expressed a powerful loathing for Chavez Jr., which is uncharacteristic for him.

He seems to genuinely resent Chavez Jr.’s privileged path to the title and views him as a fake champion. Martinez is fighting for his pride and for recognition as the undisputed middleweight champion of the world.

My prediction for this fight is that Martinez will win via unanimous decision.

His movement within the ring will baffle the flat-footed Chavez Jr., and he will land at will due to his dominant hand speed. Chavez Jr. has a great chin and will absorb Martinez’s shots, but he will lose on points.

Make no mistake: Martinez will easily win this fight because he is a superior boxer, athlete and fighter.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. doesn’t stand a chance.
