I wrote this in 2004 but thought I would share it here.
Two years later you sell a man name Ruth Everyone knew he was could but could also be uncouth All to finance your girlfriends play Hope she was worth it you could hear them say The Yankees won their first World Series that year And twenty five more after that while you watched from the rear In the nineteen twenties Ty Cobb got his 3,000 hit off your club You sent Peckinpaugh to Washington via the hub Lou Gehrig hit is first of many home runs against the Sox Four fires in two days turns Fenways left bleachers into a pile of rocks In the thirties the green monster was born But you lost to Holy cross, ho how the fans mourn Sold Pee Wee Reese to Brooklyn because he was not good enough He is in the Hall of Fame because he had the right stuff The forties were better when if forty-six you won the pennant But lost to the Card’s in game seven twenty eight years after you were last a World Series tenant Forty-eight lost a one game tiebreaker to Cleveland Forty-nine win one of two against the yanks and you are in, but again done in by a faulty glove hand The fifties came, will we ever win The way we play it must be a sin Opening day up nine to nothing over the hated yanks Billy martin’s play helps turn us into skanks Lose that one fifteen to ten Here we go again Ted William’s spit on Red Sox fans Nowadays he would get hit with beer cans The Rest of the fifties were nothing but a bore Fans in Boston would just fall asleep and snore The sixties were just as sad The Red Sox continued to play bad Then in sixty seven Red Sox nation was back in heaven The series again against the Card’s But game seven came and yet again they played like tards Nothing interesting till seventy-five Red Sox finally came alive Game seven up by three Johnny Bench with a wounded knee Brought the Reds back from behind Another Red Sox game seven loss, how can this world be so unkind Up and down till eighty-six That year the Sox found their stick Four times they were within one strike of winning it all Billy Buckner just could not get that ball Lost game seven to the Mets How many Red Sox fans smashed their TV sets Eighty-eight they traded Brady Anderson and Curt Schilling To the Orioles for a player that would never get top billing 1988 and 1990 Lost to the A’s in the ALCS Deeper and deeper into the mess Won the East in ninety five But the Indians made sure we would not stay alive The Indians did it to us again in ninety-eight Just one championship would be so great Ninety-nine the Yankee’s did us in When will we ever win Thousand three again we tried But when we lost game seven to the Yankee’s it was we that cried 04 would be different this time around Everyone on the bandwagon on this trip we are bound But in the ALCS Against the hated Yankees and down three games to nothing oh what a mess No team has ever come back down by three We can do it shouted you and me We win one and then two Our hearts beat so true We win game six now its down to one game If we lose they won’t even remember our name We beat the Yankees in game seven Red Sox Nation is now in World Series heaven Playing the Cardinal’s from the National League Oh how the papers talked about the intrigue All the history they spoke about, How past failures was our only clout. Four games is all it took Around the world buildings shook The once mighty Red Sox had finally won The Red Sox nation celebrated as one |
