Matt Schaub Reportedly Agrees to Contract Extension with Houston Texans

After a great performance on the field, QB Matt Schaub's day got even better as he has agreed to a contract extension with the Houston Texas.

Sports director at Fox 26 Mark Berman first reported the deal via Twitter.

At an average of $15.5 million per year, the contract puts Schaub among the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

The 31-year-old quarterback is in his sixth season with the team after starting his career backing up Michael Vick with the Atlanta Falcons. In that time, he has reached one Pro Bowl in 2009 and had at least a quarterback rating of 90 in each of the last four years.

Although he has consistently put up great numbers, the question that needs to be answered is whether he can be a winner. He has a 33-32 record as a starter with Houston and was injured during the team's only playoff appearance last year. 

The Lisfranc injury that kept Schaub out of the final six games of the year left some to doubt whether he can come back at the same level in 2012. Fortunately, he showed in the Week 1, 30-10 win that he has regained his old form.

Against the Miami Dolphins, the quarterback completed 20 of his 31 pass attempts and threw for 266 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. He led the Texans to 30 offensive points despite getting only three yards per carry from star running back Arian Foster.

After winning a playoff game in 2011 with T.J. Yates as a starting quarterback, the Texans expect big things this season. They are listed as the third most likely team to win the Super Bowl, according to Bovada's Super Bowl odds.

With this extension, Houston has guaranteed a number of chances to earn football's highest honor.
