US Open Tennis 2012: Latest Weather Forecast for Quarterfinals Action in NY

Jessica MarieJun 7, 2018

As rain and humidity continues to assault the East Coast, it also continues to put the U.S. Open in jeopardy.

Tuesday's play was delayed due to rain, as the U.S. Open announced via its Twitter feed:

According to the tournament's website, as of Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 9 a.m. ET, play is still scheduled to get started on time at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

According to Weather.com, the current conditions in Queens are cloudy with a temperature of 76 degrees and 92 percent humidity. The next six hours call for "widespread showers and thunderstorms developing around 10 a.m.," which certainly doesn't bode well for the Open's projected 11 a.m. start time.

The hourly forecast calls for thunderstorms stretching from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., then tapering off after 3 p.m. The good news is, Thursday's forecast looks great at sunny and 86 degrees.

The U.S. Open website reiterates the fact that those who held tickets for Tuesday's Session 18 (which was cancelled) may exchange their tickets for the same session in next year's tournament or for other sessions at this year's U.S. Open.

U.S. superstar Andy Roddick—who announced last week that he'll retire at the conclusion of the Open—was one of the players affected most by Tuesday's delays and postponements. According to the Associated Press, he was scheduled to face Juan Martin Del Potro in the fourth round on Tuesday night, but the match was postponed with Roddick leading 1-0 in the first-set tiebreaker.

Will the halt in play disrupt Roddick's momentum, or will the extra rest be good for him? Without further delays, we should find out when the match resumes on Wednesday.

The AP also reports that among the other matches that were halted were Novak Djokovic vs. Stanislas Wawrinka and Janko Tipsarevic vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber.

On the women's side, Maria Sharapova's bout against Marion Bartoli was postponed with Bartoli up 4-0 in the first set, according to The New York Times. The match will resume on Wednesday.
