NFL Predictions Week 1: Ugly Offenses That Will Be Exposed This Week

Ian HanfordJun 7, 2018

Waiting for the NFL season to kickoff is excruciating, but the 2012 campaign has arrived with all the excitement that accompanies it.

The season's opening week will give us our first chance to really gauge the path of each professional franchise. Preseason isn't an accurate barometer, but everything from this point on is.

Every team has their potential weakness, or two, entering the season. For some, that fatal flaw will be their offense.

Let's take a look at three paltry attacks that will be exposed for what they are in Week 1.

New York Jets

This has something to do with the Buffalo Bills improved defense, but it has everything to do with the Jets' inept attack.

It's good to keep people guessing coming into the regular season. You don't want to top your hand, and it's possible to use a surprise strategy to your advantage, but not if you're New York.

Will they use the Wildcat? How much will Tim Tebow play, and in what role? Is Mark Sanchez capable of running an offense? If he can't, who will?

These are all viable questions without any right answer. The Wildcat isn't a full-time offense for a team that wants to win. Tebow isn't going to start, and Sanchez hasn't shown that he's ready for that next step.

As for the last question, the answer is no one. Shonn Greene ran for just over 1,000 yards and six touchdowns last season, but he's not who you want carrying your offense.

Buffalo finished in the bottom half of the league last season defensively, but the additions of Mario Williams and rookie cornerback Stephon Gilmore will help exponentially.

Look for Marcell Dareus to take another step forward in his sophomore season, and Jairus Byrd is one of the league's more underrated safeties.

This could be a battle of attrition, but one thing is certain. The Jets won't score a lot of points on Sunday, and it's hard to see that changing throughout the course of the season.

Miami Dolphins

At this point, I feel like I could play wide receiver for the Dolphins. Ryan Tannehill has inherited an empty cupboard in South Beach, and it's going to be painfully obvious against the Houston Texans in Week 1.

The receiving corps is led by Legedu Naanee, Davone Bess, Marlon Moore and Anthony Armstrong. You can also throw Brian Hartline and Rishard Matthews into that mix, but it doesn't make a difference.

Tannehill has very little to throw too. Bess is his best option, but he's a slot receiver on the right team.

Houston's secondary and pass rush will dominate the Dolphins' pass offense, and it's not like they can lean on the run. Reggie Bush is a shifty player, and improved, but he will be swallowed up by the Texans' menacing front seven.

This shouldn't be a surprise. The Dolphins were a bad squad last year and will probably be worse this season.

For an offense with little talent, Houston is a nightmare matchup to start the year.

Minnesota Vikings

The Jacksonville Jaguars aren't expected to have a winning season, or to score many points of their own, but they will befuddle the Vikings offense on Sunday.

Adrian Peterson is back, but we aren't sure how much he will be available in Week 1. Toby Gerhart is a powerful runner, but I wouldn't lean on him to run the show.

The Vikings actually don't have a terrible collection of passing weapons.

Christian Ponder showed some positive signs in his rookie season behind center, and he has targets to look for.

Percy Harvin was among the league's reception leaders. Michael Jenkins is a capable possession option, and Kyle Rudolph has considerable upside at tight end.

The situation in Minnesota could be much worse, but Jacksonville was the No. 6 pass defense in the NFL last season. They will handle the Vikings' offense in what should be a relatively low-scoring matchup.
