New England Patriots Reportedly Set to Work Out Veteran TE Kellen Winslow

Rick WeinerJun 7, 2018

Apparently having two Pro Bowl-caliber tight ends isn't enough for the Patriots, who, according to Pro Football Talk, could be adding yet another prominent piece to Tom Brady's offensive arsenal:

"

Patriots are bringing in TE Kellen Winslow for a workout, per league source.

A veteran of seven NFL seasons, the 29-year-old was released by the Seattle Seahawks this past weekend when he refused to reduce his salary, making him a free agent.

Tampa Bay's leading receiver each of the past three seasons, Winslow hauled in 218 passes for 2,377 yards and 12 touchdowns in his Buccaneers career.

Those numbers are close to the production he put forth as a member of the Cleveland Browns, where he had 219 receptions for 2,459 yards and 11 trips to the end zone.

He's been felled by leg injuries throughout his career, and he was limited in the preseason with the Seahawks, catching only three passes for 34 yards and a touchdown.

Winslow has undergone multiple operations on his knees over the course of his career, so his days as an explosive receiving threat are long gone.

But he remains a viable weapon when healthy, and should his workout go well and he become a member of the Patriots, he would make the most talented group of tight ends in football even more impressive.

He certainly won't overtake Rob Gronkowski or Aaron Hernandez on the depth chart, but both Daniel Fells and Visanthe Shiancoe could find themselves on the outside looking in should Winslow join the fray in Foxboro.

There's no harm in seeing whether Winslow has anything to offer. This is just another shrewd move by Bill Belichick, one that could very well result in the rich getting richer and the Patriots offense becoming more potent than it already is.
