David Nelson: Complete Fantasy Profile and Draft Strategy

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Buffalo Bills wide receiver David Nelson is a nice, cheap receiver option for deeper leagues and a possible candidate for a bottom-of-the-roster receiver in more standard leagues.

The 25-year-old is coming off a season in which he had 61 catches for 658 yards and five touchdowns. He almost doubled his yards and catches from his rookie season last year. Moving into his third season, he will see those numbers improve again.

This, of course, is health permitting, but Nelson has only missed one game in his two seasons.

At 6'5", Nelson is a nice big target for the red zone. But while he will get his opportunities to catch touchdown passes, he is not the kind who's going to put up eye-popping yardage totals. He didn't catch more than 84 yards worth of passes in any game last year.

Average Draft Position: 150.87 (according to NFL.com, only owned in 0.6 percent of leagues)

Bye Week: 8

Projection: 65 catches, 738 yards, 7 touchdowns

Nelson Needs to be Drafted Before These Guys: Steve Breaston, Emmanuel Sanders

Breaston is an injury concern. He is also in danger of seeing his playing time slip, with Jonathan Baldwin and Dexter McCluster likely getting more targets in the passing game headed their way.

Sanders is in a Pittsburgh offense that wants to get back to running the ball. He could find himself with very few targets this year.

Take These Guys Before Nelson: Josh Morgan, Kevin Walter

These three guys have a higher ceiling than Nelson and about the same floor.

With Josh Morgan getting a chance to grow into a role and develop chemistry with Redskins rookie Robert Griffin III, he could develop into a bigger weapon.

Walter is not a consistent producer, but should Andre Johnson miss time again this season, Walter's value will skyrocket.

Nelson is a fairly safe pick. He has enjoyed good health, is in an offense that likes to throw it around and he is a nice red-zone target. He's not a bad option in a pinch.
