Most Contested Match of the Day

Andy Murray, the Gold medal British tennis sensation, had his troubles in his third-round matchup against the hard-hitting Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

Lopez fought hard and made things interesting, but ultimately fell to Murray in four sets (7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6).

He certainly made things difficult for Murray as he attempted to pull off the upset at Flushing. Murray survived, despite committing 48 unforced errors.

Biggest Surprise of the Day

Maria Kirilenko is coming off of a semifinals appearance at the 2011 U.S. Open. The Russian pro unexpectedly lost to the unseeded Andrea Hlavackova from the Czech Republic in three sets.

It wasn’t easy, though, as Kirilenko won the first set and put up a fight until the very end after dropping the last two sets at 6-4.

What’s Next?

The second day of the third round is happening Sunday, and the winners will advance to the Round of 16 on Monday and Tuesday.

Roger Federer is playing at the top of his game as of late and is the man to beat in the men’s singles bracket. He will face 30-year-old American Mardy Fish, who upset Gilles Simon in a match that went past 1 a.m. Sunday morning.

As for the women’s singles, Serena Williams is playing like a woman possessed. It will take an impeccable performance from her opponent in order to stop her bid for the U.S. Open crown.
