US Open Tennis 2012 Results: Recap and Analysis of Day 2 Highlights
Tuesday's action at Flushing Meadows was even more exciting than Monday's matches, and that should have everyone excited for what the rest of this tournament has in store for us.
All the "heavy" favorites escaped their challenges on Day 2, but some higher seeds did fall. As you'll see below (and on the linked list), a handful of favored players met their match earlier than expected.
Two days of competitive play set up what should be an intriguing slate on Day 3.
Let's recap Tuesday's action with some scores and analysis.
Scores
Here is the full list of scores from Tuesday's action, but I'll highlight some of the day's biggest scores:
Agnieszka Radwanska (2) defeated Nina Bratchikova 6-1, 6-1
Andy Roddick (20) defeated Rhyne Williams 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
Venus Williams defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3, 6-1
Tomas Berdych (6) defeated David Goffin 7-5, 6-3, 6-3
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (5) defeated Karol Beck 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (2)
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez defeated Juan Monaco (10) 3-6, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3)
Angelique Kerber defeated Anne Keothavong 6-2, 6-0
Novak Djokovic (2) defeated Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-0, 6-1
Serena Williams (4) defeated Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-1
Kiki Bertens defeated Christina McHale (21) 4-6, 6-4, 6-3
Andy Roddick Plays On
Roddick emerged as the next great American player when he won the U.S. Open in 2003, but those days are far behind him.
He's only advanced to the Finals one time since then, and it's no secret that he could lose any time he steps foot on the court. He's the No. 20 seed in this year's field, but his advancement is never a guarantee.
However, he did play well on Tuesday in his straight-set victory over fellow American Rhyne Williams.
Roddick's game relies solely on his rocket-like serve. If he's striking the ball accurately, he can be very tough to overcome.
Mardy Fish gives the American side hope as well, but Roddick will always be looked at with hopeful eyes.
His future is uncertain, but Tuesday's victory was a start.
Williams Sisters Both Move On
Neither win is shocking, but both are noteworthy given the sisters' status in the tennis world.
Serena's the No. 4 seed and showed her stuff in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Coco Vandeweghe Tuesday evening. Her ultra-powerful game is virtually impossible to stop if she's striking the ball crisply, and she was in Round 1.
Venus doesn't enter with a seed attached to her name, but she has won this tournament twice. She advanced to the second round last year, and her victory over Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Tuesday ensured that she will at least make it that far this year.
The Williams sisters are two of the most iconic female athletes in sports history, but the clock is ticking on their careers.
Enjoy them while you can, tennis fans.
Juan Monaco Falls
Monaco isn't necessarily a household name, but he was the tournament No. 10 seed. That makes unranked Guillerme Garcia-Lopez's victory an upset.
If you can't tell by the lengthy stretch of numbers above, this was an interesting match. Garcia-Lopez lost the first two sets, but rallied back to win the next three.
Winning the last two sets 7-6, 7-6 put a certain emphasis on this Round 1 upset. It wasn't an easy one, and it was exciting action for an opening-round tilt.
Any upset at this point in the tournament is worth noting, and Monaco's highlights the tournament's first two days.
Make sure you tune into Day 3's action. You won't want to miss a second.
