US Open Tennis 2012 Results: Full Recap and Analysis from Opening Action
The U.S. Open is off and running, and the first day packed a ton of action, a few upsets and strong performances by top seeds.
Roger Federer and Andy Murray cruised in straight sets, but neither looked as good as defending women's champ Samantha Stosur.
Stosur has not won a tournament yet this year, but you wouldn't have known that as she quickly dispatched of Petra Martic 6-1, 6-1. Stosur incredibly won the first 19 points of this match and dominated her opponent by effectively charging the net time and time again.
The seventh seed made it clear that her game, which is made for the hardcourt, is soaring. She is going to make a serious run at defending her title.
Below is everything you need to be brought up to speed form the first day of play.

Recap
The New American Hope
The state of American men's tennis has been bleak for years now, but a new hope has burst onto the scene.
18-year-old Jack Sock defeated 22-seeded Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-2, 3-2. Mayer retired from the match after five games in the third set.
Sure, this is just one match, but this is just the next step in Sock's development. He won the mixed doubles title with Melanie Oudin at last year's U.S. Open, and the junior boys' title in Flushing Meadows in 2010. Oh, he also never lost a single high school match.
So Jack's socking of Mayer (might as well get used to the terrible puns because there will be plenty more as he matures) should not be seen as a fluke. With his talent and complete game, Sock could add a few more 2012 U.S. Open upsets to his drawer.
Down Goes the 16th Seed
Sabine Lisicki has had a rough go of things lately. She entered her first-round match with Sorana Cirstea having lost her last two matches. That streak is now at three straight.
Lisicki took the first set 6-4, but only won two games in each of the next two sets.
This time last year, Lisicki was a player on the rise. Now she appears to be tumbling to middling status, and she has a sub-.500 record on the year to show for it.
Club Fed Cruises
Roger Federer took the court at night, and that was bad news for his opponent Donald Young. Federer rolled into this match 21-0 all time in night matches at the U.S. Open.
Federer cruised past Young in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Federer was in top form, and 1 hour and 34 minutes after the match started, the No. 1 seed had seven aces and a spot in the second round.
For Young, this is just another disappointment in a rough year for the American. Last week, he ended his 17-match losing streak, but here he was enduring another beating. However, he won't be the only one to lose in straight sets to Federer at this tournament.
