What We're Watching
No Rafael Nadal
After pulling out of the U.S. Open to get healthy for 2013, likely tournament favorite Rafael Nadal will not be a thorn in the side of the men’s division this time around.
Instead, tournament semifinal regulars Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will have a much easier task of getting to the finals or even winning the entire Grand Slam.
There is still Roger Federer, though.
Roger Federer’s Chance
With no Rafa in the field and the Djoker playing as mediocre as he has at any point over the last two years, Roger Federer has the chance to add another Grand Slam title to his resume.
There may not be many more chances for glory left in the aging legs of Federer, but a big win at the U.S. Open would be a nice cherry on his 2012 season.
Serena Williams is Red Hot
On the women’s side, there is no better player right now than American star Serena Williams, and she will carry the momentum of a Wimbledon win and a gold medal into the U.S. Open.
If the field shakes out the way she needs it to, there is little doubt in anyone’s mind that Serena has to be the favorite on the women’s side.
With as much momentum as she is riding, Williams' success will not be a surprise.
