What's At Stake?
Revenge is at stake for the Oakland Raiders, who blew a 13-point lead at home to the Detroit Lions in Week 15 of last season. Two late fourth-quarter touchdown passes from Matthew Stafford gave the Lions a one-point victory on the road. The loss was Oakland's third in a row and all but crushed its playoff hopes in 2011.
This Saturday, the Raiders can avenge that defeat, although it won't help them get any closer to their ultimate goal of making the postseason in 2012.
The biggest things at stake on Saturday night are the futures of the non-stars trying to make an NFL roster this summer.

Fantasy Prospect to Watch
Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden only played in seven games last season and was banged up throughout the year, but he still managed to average 5.4 yards per carry.
McFadden's breakout season in 2010 is still fresh in the minds of many fantasy owners. He rushed for 1,157 yards and seven touchdowns that year, proving to be a worthy fantasy pick at running back.
Fantasy owners should watch McFadden carefully on Saturday night against Detroit to see how well he can run against the NFL's 23rd-ranked rush defense from 2011. If McFadden looks hampered or the Raiders offensive line seems shaky, maybe he is a star worth passing on this summer.
What They're Saying
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz wants to win on Saturday, but not at the cost of losing any of his starters. Here's Schwartz's thoughts on how long he'll play the Lions' stars, per The Detroit Free Press' Carlos Monarrez:
""Well, we'll have a plan, and it's not going to be an exact number of snaps or a half or more than a half," Schwartz said. "We're just sort of taking it as it comes. We want to play well. We want to win the game. That's the No. 1, No. 2 objectives. They're all dress rehearsals to some extent. I know this much: We're not going to go through an entire game (with starters), so we'll be somewhere less than that."
"
Meanwhile, Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer isn't too worried about his inconsistent play this preseason, per The Oakland Tribune's Jerry McDonald:
""That's what (preseason) is for, really, unless you're a young guy that hasn't played and just wants to get acclimated to the speed of the game," Palmer said. "I've been around long enough, and that's not something I'm trying to do."
"
Sure, Palmer is going to defend himself for his poor August play, but his preseason numbers suggest he's a bit rattled: 16-of-30, 140 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions.
Lions Player to Watch
The player to watch in blue and white on Saturday night is without question wide receiver Calvin Johnson.
The Madden 13 cover star caught 96 balls for more than 1,680 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2011. Not to mention just last week against the Baltimore Ravens, Johnson went for 111 yards and a score on five catches. Baltimore's pass defense was ranked fourth in the league a season ago.
Johnson will be targeted countless times by quarterback Matthew Stafford in 2012, and he'll see more than his fair share of double coverage. Still, at 6'5", Johnson boasts the speed, power and hands to dominate opposing secondaries, regardless of whether they see it coming.
Raiders Player to Watch
If the Oakland Raiders are going to make any noise in the AFC West this fall, they will need veteran quarterback Carson Palmer to step up in his first full season under center in Oakland. Palmer played in 10 games for the Raiders in 2011 but was extremely careless with the football, throwing 16 interceptions to just 13 touchdowns.
Oakland nearly finished the 2011 season with a top 10-ranked passing attack thanks to Palmer's big arm, but the team's woeful turnover rate held it back.
The Raiders gave the ball away 30 times last season, which was tied for second most in the AFC. Protecting the football starts with Carson Palmer at quarterback.
Key Matchup
The obvious key matchup in this preseason showdown is the Lions' vaunted aerial assault vs. the Raiders' porous pass defense. Detroit ranked fourth in the NFL in passing yards last season, while Oakland ranked 27th in passing yards allowed in 2011.
This matchup clearly favors Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson and the Lions, which is why they should be the favorite to come out on top in the two teams' third preseason game.
Just last season, the Raiders showed how poorly they defended the pass against the Lions, giving up 391 yards and four touchdowns through the air to Stafford. So, look for more of the same this weekend.
Prediction
With both teams' starters playing a significant chunk of Saturday night's regular-season rehearsal, this matchup is much easier to predict. I like the Lions to win a relatively high-scoring game in Oakland.
Stafford and Johnson will team up early and often against the Raiders' shaky secondary. In the end, the Lions head home with their second road win of the preseason.
