US Open Tennis 2012 Odds: Andy Murray and More Bad Bets to Avoid
The 2012 U.S. Open will begin at the Billie Jean National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows on August 27. There are a number of top players who plan to participate, although Spanish sensation Rafael Nadal will be noticeably absent due to a knee injury.
With Nadal out, those who wish to make some money on the event would be wise to bet last year’s champion—Novak Djokovic, or five-time winner Roger Federer—who has been resurgent in 2012.
With that noted, let’s take a look at some bets you should avoid and the players current odds, courtesy of Bovada.lv.
Andy Murray: 4/1
Murray might be one of the most popular picks in this tournament. He’s certainly got a chance to advance to the finals, but there is no way the Great Britain national is going to win it all in Queens, NY.
He’s fresh off an epic Olympics gold medal victory in London, and it’s unlikely that the momentum will carry across the Atlantic. Djokovic and Federer are just too hungry and talented to drop two sets to Murray.
At 4/1, there is simply no way to rationalize a bet on Murray.
Juan Martin Del Potro: 10/1
Del Potro pulled out a miraculous U.S. Open victory in 2009, but he simply will not repeat that incredible feat this season.
The 23-year-old Argentinian has never won a Grand Slam singles tournament—aside from that ’09 Open—and it’s unlikely he will anytime soon with Djoker and Federer around.
While Del Potro is talented, he’s not elite and should never be bet on to win at 10/1.
Rest of Field
To put this simply, do not bet anyone besides Djokovic or Federer if you are serious about winning money.
No one else aside from those stars are seriously winning tournaments in modern tennis. If you want to throw money away, take a few long shots and hope for the best.
