Gordie Howe vs. Lou Fontinato Post Fight Photo
1 of 4Gordie Howe is known as one of the toughest players to ever play in the NHL. He was a nightmare for his opponents, but there's not a more famous fight in Howe’s career than the fight he had with New York Rangers forward Lou Fontinato.
Fontinato was known for his physicality, and in 1959, he was considered the toughest player in the game. There was significant tension between Howe and Fontinato, and it would come to a head on February 1, 1959.
Richard Bak of Detroitathletic.com tells the story in an article he wrote in January of 2012:
"“Whenever I went on the ice against the Rangers,” Howe recalled, “the coach sent Fontinato out. The idea was to work on me and distract me. Once, it cost me because I forgot a valuable bit of advice Ted Lindsay gave me. He said don’t ever drop your stick until the other man does. So we get into one game, and Louie says, ‘You want to drop your stick?’ and I said, ‘Hell, yes!’ and I threw it to the ice, and the guy hit me right over the head…about six stitches worth. He nailed me, and I stood there laughing over my stupidity, and Lindsay just shook his head.”
"
As Howe went behind the net to defend another teammate (Red Kelly), Howe recognized Fontinato out of the corner of his eye, and he proceeded to destroy his face with his right hand.
It is one of the most famous fights in hockey history, and it made Howe the toughest hockey player on the planet.

With that in mind, it would be hard to think about finding an unused ticket to the game against the Russians. But here is a set of unused tickets that were sold on classicauctions.net for not only the game against Russia but also the gold-medal game and four others from the Lake Placid Olympics.

Here is another piece of memorabilia from classicauction.net, this one being a case of wine featuring bottles with the numbers of Jean Beliveau, Guy Lafleur, Henri Richard and Yvan Cournoyer. The 2011 Cabernet wine bottles are signed by each of the players.
