WWE SummerSlam 2012 Review: Main Event Fails to Live Up to Rest of Great PPV

Tim KeeneyJun 6, 2018

For the last few months, I've often found myself thinking, "Great PPV, bad main event." At SummerSlam on Sunday, the same was once again true.ย

The highly anticipated event started out with a bangโ€”and that's not including the pre-show.ย

Jericho and Ziggler faced off, and even though no belt was on the line, this was arguably the most underrated match of the night. It was pure unadulterated action. The two very similar characters went after each other right from the start, performing plenty of high-flying moves, both in and outside of the ring.

Up next was Daniel Bryan and Kane. The Big Red Machine is the definition of a pro, and Daniel Bryan has established himself as one of the best in the business.ย

Instant classic.ย

The Miz and Rey Mysterio brought plenty of wall-to-wall action, not to mention the return of one of the greatest high-flyers of all time (not Miz).ย

Sheamus versus Alberto Del Rio was nothing special, and the controversial ending means we'll see more of feud no one really wants to see, but there's no question it had plenty of solid wrestling. It wasn't enough to stop the impressive momentum the night had built up.ย

R-Truth and Kofi Kingston were up next, and they would be fun to watch wrestle against a tree and a rock, let alone The Prime Time Players, so the Tag Team Title Match was a nice addition.ย

The Triple Threat WWE Championship Match between CM Punk, John Cena and Big Show was a classic. I could have done with less Big Show domination, but there's really no other way to work it, plus everyone still got their blows in, there was a twist ending and the entertainment was top notch.

All-in-all, it was exactly what a Pay-Per-View should be. Constant epic battles between the best guys in the business. No time-wasters. Just the best of the best going balls to the wall. No dilution.ย

Then came the main event.ย

I understand why the WWE had to make Brock Lesnar vs. HHH the main event, I just wasn't thrilled with what the big boys brought to the ring.ย

Lesnar attacking HHH's arm, HHH attacking Lesnar's ribs and repeat. And repeat. And repeat some more. They absolutely battered and bruised each, doling out a ridiculous amount of punishment, which was fun to watch, but it got boring and repetitive after a while.ย

It wasn't a bad match, but considering the thrilling matches that littered the rest of the event, it wasn't worthy of a main event in terms of action inside the ring.
