Roger Federer Defeats Novak Djokovic to Win 2012 Western & Southern Open

Richard LangfordJun 1, 2018

Roger Federer is back on top of the tennis world in an indisputable way as he easily handled Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the final of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

The BBC tweeted out the results.

"

Roger Federer beats Novak Djokovic 6-0 7-6 (9-7) to win the Cincinnati Open - the Swiss player's 76th career title

Federer was amazingly dominant in the first set. His accuracy allowed him to toy with Djokovic, who was not enjoying the same kind of pinpoint control. As you can probably deduce, Djokovic improved as this match went on, and he was in great form for the second set.

He had a chance to put Federer away in the tiebreak, but Federer turned him back with an overhand slam on a lob shot that was not deep enough. Federer quickly ended the match after closing that door.

This is Federer's fifth title in the last 11 years at this tournament.

This win not only further cements Federer's status as the world's No. 1 player, but it also clearly makes him the man to beat at the upcoming U.S. Open, which is less than two weeks away.

The last time these two met was at the semifinals at Wimbledon. Federer easily cruised 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, but that was on grass. It is a different story on the hard courts, and given that Nole beat Fed in the semifinals of the U.S. Open last year, it was still a tossup as to who the favorite for the Open should be.

It is not a tossup anymore. Once again, it is Roger Federer's tennis world, and everyone else is just hoping for second.
