Roger Federer Will Beat Novak Djokovic in Cincinnati & Carry Momentum to US Open
Roger Federer's "comeback" year is about to get even better as he is on the verge of a statement win in the final of the Western & Southern Open over Novak Djokovic, which will be right in time for both of them to keep it fresh in their mind as they head to the U.S. Open.
With the U.S. Open set to begin in two weeks (August 27), this is the final tuneup for these two legendary tennis stars for the final major of the year, and both are building up a boatload of momentum for that major.
Federer won Wimbledon, took the silver in the Olympics and has rolled in this tournament in Cincinnati.
In the semifinals, Federer easily dispatched fellow countryman Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Djokovic, who won the Rogers Cup in Toronto last Sunday night, had an even easier time advancing to these finals than Federer, and he erased a new demon in the process. Djokovic took down Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-2. That is the same del Potro that beat Nole out of the bronze in the London Games.
So both of these guys will roll into this showdown playing great tennis, and that will lead to a fantastic match—it almost always is when these two play.
Federer is always a tough matchup for Djokovic, even when no one else in the world was capable of beating him.
He ended Djokovic's 41-match win streak in 2011 when he beat him at the French Open.
This matchup certainly isn't all Federer. Djokovic returned the favor by knocking Federer from last year's U.S. Open and then this year's French Open.
However, it is Federer who has had the last upper hand as he prevailed in this year's Wimbledon 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3; he will get a similar result here.
When these two meet, it often comes down to who serves better. While the serve is not either's biggest weapon, it is vital in this matchup because of what the other does with the return.
Djokovic is one of the elite return men. When Federer is not on point with his serve it allows Djokovic to exert too much control over Fed's service points. However, Federer has been serving excellently, and not even Djokovic's epic return will make it easy for him to earn a break in this match.
Federer's groundstrokes have been as deadly as ever. He will use this to keep Djokovic on the move and off balance, and eventually it will lead to Federer's victory.
