WWE SummerSlam 2012 Results: The Miz Defeats Rey Mysterio to Retain IC Title

In his first pay-per-view match since last year's SummerSlam, Rey Mysterio was unsuccessful in his quest to win the intercontinental championship from the Miz on Sunday night in Los Angeles. 

Mysterio made his return the day after Money In the Bank last month. It appeared that he was going to be feuding with Alberto Del Rio after Mysterio saved Zack Ryder from being completely destroyed by Del Rio. 

After that, Mysterio was not really given much to do. He was in tag team matches with Sheamus and made his way back to the main event scene on SmackDown. 

Then, somewhere along the way, Mysterio just kind of got lost in the shuffle. Fortunately, Miz was there with nothing to do. 

New Raw general manager A.J. announced the blockbuster decision via Twitter to put Miz and Mysterio in the same ring together six days before SummerSlam. 

So in a match with no build that was first announced on the Internet, Miz was able to defend his championship at the second-biggest pay-per-view of the year. It is like beating a dead horse, but it's sad to see how far this championship has fallen over the years. 

Miz was practically given the championship just because he is going to be in a WWE movie, so the company feels a need to make him into some kind of a big deal to sell DVDs. 

At least Mysterio was there to give him a solid match and, as always, willing to do the job to someone he is vastly superior to in the ring. It will be interesting to see where WWE goes with both these stars after this match. 

Hopefully they get a little more promotion and hype for whatever they do at Night of Champions.
