John Cena: Loss at SummerSlam Would Be Better for Future of WWE

Sam R. QuinnJun 3, 2018

John Cena has long been one of the most recognizable faces in the WWE. He has won his fair share of titles and was, at one point, the most popular wrestler in the entire industry.

While he was a consensus fan favorite closer toward the beginning of his career, he has become a more polarizing figure over the last couple of years. Either you really like Cena or you are pretty annoyed by him at this point.

Cena is scheduled to face off against CM Punk and Big Show for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, in what is sure to be an entertaining match.

There's no way that the WWE creative team can mess this match up. All they have to do is throw the three wrestlers into the ring and let them make it look like they're beating the life out of each other for 20-plus minutes.

It is a foolproof plan, unless of course, the creative team decides to have Cena win the WWE Championship.

If Cena wins the belt, there are going to be a lot of unhappy WWE fans out there. It would be one of the more predictable occurrences that we have seen in recent memory. But after all, many of the recent Cena victories have been predictable, to say the least.

A Cena victory over Punk and Big Show would make it much harder for the creative team to conjure up a way to turn Punk into a full-fledged heel character.

Without the WWE Championship, the writers would have a hard time figuring out how to carry on the Punk and AJ Lee storyline without turning it into a painfully elongated plot line.

A successful title defense by Punk would allowed AJ to continue to put Punk at a disadvantage in title matches, making for more entertaining pay-per-view events in the future. It could also jump start AJ's departure from the general manager role, something that is absolutely inevitable.

If Cena becomes champion, AJ could feasibly hang around as the general manager and continue to make a spectacle of herself. It would also mark the seventh time in the last three years that Cena has held the title of WWE Championship (talk about repetitive).

The WWE would be better served if Punk were to retain his WWE Championship belt and continue his year-long reign atop the industry.

It would make for a more seamless transition into the next WWE story, something that always makes it easier on the fans.
