5 Most Impressive Performances of Last Weekend's Preseason Action

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

One game does not a preseason make.

However, one solid preseason game is all it takes to get noticed by the coaching staff.

After impressive performances by Julio Jones, Vincent Brown and Nick Foles last Thursday evening, we were treated to nine more games over the weekend.

Nine more opportunities to examine the efforts of a myriad of players.

Now, it's time highlight the five best outings turned in between Friday and Sunday.

William Powell, Arizona Cardinals

1 of 5

William Powell may be buried on the Arizona Cardinals' depth chart, but his impressive nine-carry, 92-yard performance against the Kansas City Chiefs definitely helps his chances to make the final 53-man roster, or at least get more opportunities to show how productive he can be.

The second-year runner out of Kansas State had a 67-yard burst at the start of the third quarter and scored from two yards out a few plays later.

At 5'9'' and 207 pounds, he's far from a punishing back, but he has the quickness and vision to potentially piece together a preseason that won't be able to be ignored by the Cardinals coaching staff.

Beanie Wells has a vast injury history. Ryan Williams has yet to play an NFL down and is coming off a torn patellar tendon in his knee. So, if Powell shows more dynamic playmaking ability, Arizona might want to keep him around as running back insurance.

Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers

2 of 5

Alex Smith is, unquestionably, the San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback. But second-year professional Colin Kaepernick reminded everyone of his supreme athleticism and scrambling abilities with a 78-yard touchdown scamper against the Minnesota Vikings in the preseason opener.

He finished the game with three carries for 92 yards.

Kaepernick completed 5-of-9 passes for 40 yards to add to his rushing total.

Obviously, the explosive run won't lead to the Nevada alum taking Smith's job, but it will certainly remind head coach Jim Harbaugh that he has a running weapon at quarterback he could utilize in certain situations to confuse opposing defenses.

Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins

3 of 5

Ryan Tannehill was poised and extremely effective in his preseason debut against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Operating the same offensive system he ran in college, the former Texas A&M gun-slinger finished the 14-of-21 for 167 yards with a touchdown pass.

He was calm in the pocket and delivered the ball rather accurately with impressive zip.

With David Garrard sidelined for up to four weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, Tannehill's made a huge jump in the quarterback competition.

Matt Moore still stands in his way, but if he builds on his sound effort against Tampa Bay, he'll be named the starter in Miami prior to the season opener against the Houston Texans

Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks

4 of 5

Despite throwing an interception in his professional debut, Russell Wilson shined for the Seattle Seahawks against the Tennessee Titans on Saturday.

He went 12-of-16 for 124 yards and tossed a 39-yard strike to Braylon Edwards for a touchdown. Along with that, he ran three times for 59 yards and scored on a 32-yard bootleg to secure the win for the Seahawks.

The three-way quarterback competition is still up for grabs, and though Wilson may have started the game as the long shot, he made it known that he's still a legitimate candidate to win the starting job.

Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts

5 of 5

Luck had the best and most efficient game of the weekend's action. He was 10-of-18 for 188 yards with two touchdown passes and also scrambled for nine yards on one occasion.

Like Tannehill, Luck was poised and seemingly unfazed when calling plays and delivering the football to his pass-catchers.

The highly-touted signal-caller's first pass resulted in a 63-yard touchdown to Donald Brown. The only throw he truly "missed" was an overthrown pass intended for offensive lineman Joe Reitz, who reported as an eligible receiver on the play.

His command in the huddle and the pocket should be extremely encouraging for Colts fans.
