Girardi: Coke Is in the Bullpen
Peter Abraham spoke with Joe Girardi today, and asked him about Phil Coke’s role on the team. Girardi says that they plan on using him as a reliever. I think that’s a good idea, as he looked very sharp in the reliever role last year. He could serve as the long man in the bullpen, or he could be used in certain situations. We didn’t get a very big sample size of Coke last year, but I definitely think this guy is good.
"“He’s a guy we see being able to pitch multiple innings out of the bullpen. That’s how we’re going to try and develop him,” Girardi said. “Right now, he’s not a starter.”
“I feel like I could go four innings if they want or pitch to one batter,” Coke said yesterday. “I started a lot in the minors but I liked pitching in relief last year. Whatever they want.”
