Roger Federer: Olympics Will Be Fed-Ex's Last Great Performance
Roger Federer is ready to submit his final masterpiece.
Arguably the greatest tennis player of all time is slowly winding his career down. After a two-year Grand Slam drought, Federer won Wimbledon, playing as well as he ever has.
Now he's ready for an encore, and it will be his final.
Federer will be playing for the gold medal on his favorite surface (grass), and he will be playing in (likely) his final Olympics. With that combination, you can be sure that he will put forth a legendary performance.
Unfortunately for the fans, it will likely be his last.
It's foolish to bet against a legend like Federer, but at some point he won't be able to play at this high a level. Many people (myself included) thought his run was over a few months ago. After his performance at Wimbledon, many people think his run could last another few years.
Realistically, though, it's probably a combination of both. Federer will be competitive for another few years, but he won't be able to play at the elite level everyone is accustomed to seeing. Federer has approximately one great performance left, and it will happen at these Olympics.
He has never medaled in singles at the Olympics, and it's the final thing left for him to do. Once he stands on top of that podium, Federer will have accomplished everything possible on the tennis court.
After he achieves his final goal, Federer won't have much left to play for. Sure, he has a lot of pride and is an intense competitor, but there won't be the same drive behind him. Accordingly, Federer will most likely not be able to perform at such a high level.
Federer is one of the greatest of all time, and he's won just about everything possible on a tennis court. He has one mountain left to climb, and he will submit an all-time great performance to climb it.
