WWE SmackDown Rebound: The Vicious Circle Begins...

Ron JohnsonFeb 20, 2009

SmackDown begins with highlights from No Way Out and RAW featuring the war between Edge and John Cena.

After the video package, Edge makes his way down to the ring to continue the gloating he started on RAW this past Monday. As he begins to walk away from the ring, Jeff Hardy comes out in some auspicious face paint. Hardy comes down to confront the new World Heavyweight Champion. Hardy calls Vickie a pitiful excuse for a GM. Hardy then challenges Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship tonight. But like always, Edge backs down from the challenge with a barrage of insults.

As Edge says there’s no way he’ll face Jeff Hardy tonight, title or non-title. So Hardy persuades him…by dropping him with the Twist of Fate in the middle of the ring. After the altercation, we relive the final battle between Randy Orton and Shane McMahon this past Monday that prompted the return of Triple H to RAW.

Back on the program, Edge tosses Kizarny out of Vickie’s office and tells his wife that he will face Jeff Hardy…however, the gold will not be on the line.

Divas Tag Team Match

Michelle McCool & Maryse vs. Eve Torres & Maria

Michelle and Maria start the match with McCool getting the early advantage. The two battle back and forth, but it is Maryse that provides enough distraction to help McCool keep control. Maryse comes in and picks up where Michelle left off. But the Divas Champion spends more time showing up the former Divas Champion.

This helps Maria tag in Eve, who comes in firing on all cylinders. Eve looks to continue control, but Michelle kicks Eve in the head to help Maryse get the cover and the victory. After the bell, the two rivals leave the ring without getting into anymore conflict.

Intermission: Valentine’s Day Date between The Dirt Sheet and The Bella Twins

As The Dirt Sheet continue to insult the Twins, The Colons decide to have some fun with the World Tag Team Champions. The WWE Tag Team Champions land pie in the face of the Twins. As the four fight about the pies, The Dirt Sheet vanishes from the restaurant.

Shelton Benjamin & Chavo Guerrero vs. MVP & R-Truth

Before the bell, Chavo and Shelton attack R-Truth before the bell. But MVP comes out and breaks up the assault.

The match goes on, but it is now a handicap match between MVP and the two men who left him lifeless last week. MVP drops Chavo and lands the BALLIN’ Elbow Drop. But thanks to Shelton, Chavo is able to make the tag.

As MVP grabs some momentum, Shelton delivers a huge T-Bone Suplex. As Shelton preps for the Paydirt, Chavo tags himself in and starts to deliver the Three Amigos. But as he prepares for the Frog Splash, Benjamin tags himself in only to get dropped by his partner with the Frog Splash. After the Splash, MVP lands the Drive By to pick up the win as Chavo walks away from the match.

Interlude: JR’s Interview with WWE Champion Triple H

The Game talks about his two daughters before sending a message to Randy Orton, the man who RKO’d his wife this past Monday night on RAW. He says that Orton indeed crossed the line when he put his hands on Mrs. Triple H. It’s clear that The Game will be returning to RAW to take care of The Legacy piece by piece.

If I were Orton, I would stay as far away from Nashville and RAW as humanly possible.

Umaga vs. Scotty Goldman

Umaga starts off the physicality with a Samoan Sidebuster followed by a high kick to ground Goldman. Umaga then hit’s the Samoan Charge to a knocked out underdog followed by the Samoan Spike to pick up the easy win over the departing Scotty Goldman. In case you didn’t know, Goldman was competing in his final match, as WWE announced that they and Goldman have agreed to part ways.

Back on the program, we get a quick rewind of the announcement that Shawn Michaels will face JBL for the right to challenge The Undertaker @ Wrestlemania 25. As the show returns live, Vickie Guerrero comes out and insults both HBK and JBL. Vickie decides that if anyone will take the challenge of facing The Undertaker @ Wrestlemania, it will be…Vladimir Kozlov (are you kidding me?). She must be kidding at this point to think that this Vodka swishing moron is going to win that match.

She goes on to say that Kozlov will face The Undertaker next week on SmackDown. Kozlov begins to butcher the English language once again saying that he will be on RAW to destroy JBL & HBK…then he will destroy The Deadman next week.

After the announcement, we find out that former Women’s Champion and TNA Knockouts Champion Gail Kim will be coming soon to the WWE.

After the break, JR drops the bombshell that we all saw coming: Triple H will be in Nashville this Monday night to decimate Randy Orton. We also take another look at the two men who will join Stone Cold Steve Austin in the Hall of Fame: Terry and Dory Funk, Jr.

Main Event

Edge vs. Jeff Hardy

Edge tries to get control, but Hardy continues to be one step ahead of the World Champion. Hardy continues the pressure with a wrist lock on the Rated R Superstar. But Edge is able to get control with a neck breaker off the ropes. But he is unable to gain complete control as Hardy has wiped the gas out of him.

Back on the program, Edge continues the assault with a quick hair pull on the former WWE Champion followed by a neck breaker. Edge keeps the pressure on with a knee and a headlock from the World Heavyweight Champion. Despite launching himself out of the ring, Hardy manages to slide back in the ring before the ten count. A frustrated Edge starts to stomp on Hardy, but the Enigma continues to fight out of the pinfalls. Hardy starts to fight back with a high flying dive over the top rope onto the World Champion.

Both men jump up after a near fall and nail each other with a clothesline. Edge tries to use the ropes to gain an advantage, but the ref catches him and breaks the pin. Both men jump up slug it out until Hardy hits the Whisper In the Wind. Hardy starts building momentum with a series of clotheslines and a solo Poetry in Motion. But Edge bounces back and delivers a huge boot to the face of Jeff Hardy. But Hardy bounces back and lands a flying leg drop over the top rope.

Hardy goes for the Twist of Fate, but Edge counters into an Edgecution. Hardy once again fights back and is able to kick out of the pinfall. Edge then sets up for the Spear, but Hardy counters into a Twist of Fate followed by the Swanton Bomb. But before Hardy can get the pinfall, Matt Hardy comes in and delivers a Twist of Fate of his own to cause the DQ.

Hardy then comes into the ring and tells his brother, “I’m going to give you a chance to turn your luck around because next week, it’s going to be you and me. One on one.” Matt Hardy stares at the carnage he has caused before he walks out of the ring. Following the departure of Matt, Edge delivers a Spear to a prone Jeff Hardy.

But Edge shouldn’t be worried too much about Jeff Hardy…he should be worried that next week, John Cena is slated to arrive on SmackDown to gun for his rematch with The Rated R Superstar.
