Analyzing the Latest Buzz on Tim Tebow and Jets' Minicamp

Dylan LewisJun 7, 2018

This week marks the start of a new season for the New York Jets, No. 1 in the hearts of members of Gang Green Nation and the media alike.

With players reporting for the start of minicamp, some speculation ends, while other stories are just beginning.

The names Tim Tebow, Santonio Holmes and Darrelle Revis have all been preseason buzz words for a team looking return to the playoffs after a disappointing 2011 campaign. Here is an update on the news following these players and the major storylines surrounding the team as they reconvene for the 2012 season.

Darrelle Revis Will Not Hold out

1 of 3

Jets fans everywhere can breathe a collective sigh of relief.

According to ESPN, Darrelle Revis, the Jets Pro-Bowl cornerback, will attend the team's minicamp practices.

Initial reports had speculated that Revis might holdout from team activities in protest of his current contract. After holding out two seasons ago, the corner signed a front loaded four-year deal paying him a total of $46 million.

The primary motivation for Revis's return is a clause in his previous contract; were he to hold out, a three year extension on his current contract would automatically kick in. Additionally, under the new collective bargaining agreement, by holding out, Revis would lose his $1 million reporting bonus and garner a fine of $30,000 per day.

His non-holdout status doesn't mean an end to possible contract negotiations with the team in the future, but knowing Revis will be at camp is certainly a good sign for Gang Green.

Santonio Holmes Keeps Talking

2 of 3

As electrifying as Santonio Holmes can be on the field, he is perhaps most conductive when talking to the media.

Throughout his brief time in New York, the standout wide receiver has always been a reliable soundbite for reporters looking for Jets gossip. This year's preseason has been no different.

Last week, in reference to the Tebow-Sanchez quarterback controversy, he told the NFL Network a two-quarterback system will not work in the NFL, saying:

"

"You have to allow one quarterback to get into the rhythm of the game. It starts from the preparation in practice, knowing the first couple of plays that he's going to take these reps. It's getting a feel for coming onto the field with the crowd awaiting you. It's the making the mistakes early in the game to finishing the games at the end. You don't just change a guy out just because he has a few mistakes early in a game."

"

After taking this stance, Holmes explained that in a programmed role, Tebow would succeed and help the team:

"

"Whether he plays at quarterback, Sanchez is on the field or off the field, those are the plays that Coach has designed for Tebow to run that week. I'm pretty sure he's going to get them done and he's going to do his job just as well as any other quarterback would when they get an opportunity to get on the field."

"

The wideout's comments did not end there. Later in the week, he addressed the New York media via NFL.com:

"

"If you guys want to be, and this is for the New York media, if you guys want to be a part of our team and want to feel so important, be there to support us, not to try to break us down...If the New York media wants to be a part of our team and wants to continue writing about us, write positive things, stay away from the negative because it doesn’t do anything good for our team."

"

As long as he produces come the regular season, fans won't mind Santonio sounding off, but if the team's 2012 campaign goes sour, his media outbursts won't be treated as kindly.

Tebow Still Working on His Throwing Mechanics

3 of 3

Ever since his pre-draft workouts, one of the biggest obstacles facing Tim Tebow on his path to becoming a legitimate NFL quarterback has been his throwing motion.

Tebow's unorthodox style has been a subject discussed in bar rooms, at sports anchor tables and even Sports Science pieces

In another effort to mold his technique to that of a prototypical pro quarterback, Tebow began working out with "throwing guru" Tom House.

House has worked with pro quarterbacks Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer and Alex Smith in the past and told ESPN that with their sessions together:

"

"I think he's getting better, but the proof is in the pudding...Being out here at USC is different than being with the New York Jets."

"

Mark Sanchez is the clear starter, but Tebow's continued efforts will make him a viable option if he gets hurt.
