Jordyn Wieber: Gymnast Will Continue US Streak of All-Around Gold in London
Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin will be watching you very carefully, Jordyn Wieber, hoping you continue the streak of gold medals in the women's gymnastics all-around competition.
No pressure or anything.
Of course, Wieber is more than up for the task. Her resume is pretty darn impressive, and her 2011 alone makes her one of the favorites heading into London.
From John Coon of Yahoo Sports:
"2011 became a major breakout year for Wieber. She won gold medals in the all-around, uneven bars and floor at the U.S. National Championships. Then Wieber followed up by winning the all-around at the 2011 World Championships. Wieber also helped the U.S. win a team gold medal and earned a bronze in balance beam. She is a three-time America Cup all-around champion (2009, 2011, 2012).
"
Of course, Wieber's teammate Gabby Douglas stole some of the spotlight heading into the Olympics when she won the all-around competition at the U.S. Gymnastics Trials earlier this month. They lead a team strong enough to win the gold in the team competition this year for just the second time in American history.
But it is Wieber who has been considered the favorite for gold in London since her epic 2011 World Championships.
The 17-year-old has spend the past 15 years—she technically started on the mat at the age of two, though surely her training wasn't so serious back then—preparing for this moment, so you know Wieber will be ready to go.
Her coach is Marta Karolyi, who guided Nadia Comaneci when she famously was awarded seven "perfect 10" marks in the 1978 Montreal Games.
So she's in good hands, too.
While much of the talk stateside has revolved around Michael Phelps against Ryan Lochte, the men's basketball team and even Usain Bolt against Yohan Blake, it is Wieber who could be this year's biggest Olympic star.
She's got a streak to maintain, after all.
