Will Batista's Injury Benefit Him, And Randy Orton?

JFeb 17, 2009

Roughly two months ago Batista was punted in the head by Randy Orton kayfabe putting him out of action with concussion. In reality Batista was taking time out to receive surgery to his hamstring, injured earlier in the year during his SummerSlam match with John Cena.

Before his “concussion” it seemed that the road to Wrestlemania would build up to a SummerSlam rematch in Texas for the World Heavyweight Championship, but now the title picture is somewhat different.

At first glance it might seem like this scenario hasn’t worked in Batista’s favor, especially missing out on Wrestlemania 25, but in my opinion it could turn out helping him.

Batista as a wrestler seemed pretty stale prior to his absence, and some time off to rest and rejuvenate could allow him to re-enter the WWE with new direction and vigor.

I have never been the biggest Batista fan but I certainly don’t hate him as much as some B/R writers, and think that some of the negativity he gets is unjust. He may have had a few bad performances in the past but he can pull fantastic matches out of the bag (Wrestlemania 23 and SummerSlam 08 for examples).

When Batista returns he will more than definitely receive a big push, and if done right could turn the neigh sayers into fans.

In Batista’s absence Randy Orton and Legacy have also prospered. Assuming Batista would have faced John Cena at Wrestlemania the WWE Championship match would almost certainly have been exclusively between SmackDown! Superstars.

Randy Orton may have been destined to win the Royal Rumble from the beginning, but you have to think that when Batista left the creative team had to have a rethink.

Either way he won the Rumble and is seemingly now in a WWE Championship match with Triple H at Wrestlemania 25, but I don’t think this is the scenario we would have seen if Batista was still fit.

I would never wish injury or time out of the business on any wrestler, but something needed to happen to Batista to improve his wrestling. Hopefully he will come back from injury more like the animal we want him to be, and win over those who aren’t currently impressed.
