CM Punk: Why a Heel Turn Is the Right Move to Make in the WWE

David LevinJun 28, 2012

According to his Twitter account, it looks like a heel turn may be in the works for CM Punk and the WWE.

Haven't we seen this before?

According to his Twitter account, Punk wrote on June 26 that:

"

@CMPunk: THE DEVIL

@luciusmalfoy: @CMPunk "i am the devil himself, and all of you stupid mindless people fell for it. You'll see."

"

It does seem that the WWE is looking for new ways to spice up its ratings and take on new scenarios that would not only boost ratings but get away from the stale approach the company has taken in recent months because of injuries, suspensions and poor storylines.

If Punk does indeed make a heel turn, it shows the WWE's hand at wanting the current WWE Champion to face new wrestlers, promote other superstars as possible champions (Daniel Bryan, John Cena, maybe Dolph Ziggler) and take another road toward 2013 and the idea that maybe a CM Punk/Steve Austin feud could work (which is something that has been talked about forever, but it has never materialized).

I personally like the idea. Although I love Punk and his "me against the world" attitude, he has lost some zeal in recent months and almost looks to want fan support, which is something an "anti-hero" should never dwell on.

And while he and Daniel Bryan (with the inclusion of Kane) have waged a war over the past few months that has been good, it has not been able to capitalize on just a "one-on-one" scenario, thanks in part to AJ Lee. It would interesting to see if other wrestlers would then turn face (Bryan again, maybe Kane or Dolph Ziggler) and still challenge Punk for the title.

Or, like we all know, there is someone who wears green and thinks of himself as somewhat of a superhero in the WWE who might like a crack back at Punk and the WWE Title.

My, how the tangled web of the WWE in the summer months gets woven even tighter when it comes to ratings and the need for more drama.

If you look at the WWE right row, the state of flux is disturbing and uneven.

Brock Lesnar is talked about and hinted about. But he is not on camera and won't participate until SummerSlam, or so it would appear. Chris Jericho just returned from suspension, and Randy Orton is off the grid for a bit. Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio just returned to action or have been cleared to wrestle.

And there is that green guy waiting to wrestle again (Cena).

Personally, I think Punk/Cena needs to happen, but I also like the possibility of Christian taking a stab at the WWE Title or maybe seeing Kane turn face and make another attempt at glory. Daniel Bryan is the best heel in the company today, but he is also cheered loudly by WWE fans because of his style and because people know about him in ROH.

The apple cart has to be upset somehow. This just makes a lot of sense. And it also makes for good business, which is something CM Punk was re-hired for in the first place. Because, if we all remember, the man who spoke for the silent masses just wanted to be heard and respected as a merchandising magnet, nothing more.

In that case, Triple H knew the man now holding the WWE Title was good for business not only in the ring, but in the way the WWE sells its goods.

Make the turn, Punk. Do the right thing.
