Flip Saunders May Be The Next Wizards Head Coach

brandon LamFeb 13, 2009

Flip Saunders, a successful coach in the NBA most recently with the Detroit Pistons taking them to three straight eastern conference finals, could be named the Washington Wizards head coach this summer.

Saunders has an outstanding record as a head coach, 587 wins 396 losses. Well you’re probably wondering why he does not have a head coaching job. The reason is Saunders has been unsuccessful in the NBA playoffs with a record of 47-51, but regardless of that he is still capable of getting the job done.

He spent nine-plus years with the Minnesota Timberwolves, guiding the club to eight consecutive playoff appearances and a franchise-best 58-24 record in 2003-04, the top record in the Western Conference. During his tenure in Minnesota, Saunders won NBA Western Conference Coach of the Month honors four times (April '04, February '03, January '01, January '00).

In the year 2005 Saunders was named the Detroit Pistons head coach. During his time with the Pistons he took them to three straight Eastern conference Finals. He failed to reach the NBA finals and as a result, he was fired on June 3, 2008.

This summer in training camp the Wizards had some guest speakers and coaches to appear. Saunders was invited by former Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld to speak to the team and help out with drills.

When the Wizards fired Eddie Jordan after the 1-10 start people were wondering well who could be the next coach? Saunders' name was brought up in numerous occasions and people believe he would be the next head coach for the Wizards.

''Saunders perhaps makes the most sense of the unemployed coaches, since he has had success everywhere he's been, and he is very creative offensively, something a team with weapons like Arenas, Butler, and Antawn Jamison would probably enjoy," according to a source.

We will see what happens.
