Clemson Football: Latest Summer News and Recruiting Updates

Randy ChambersJun 2, 2018

It should be another exciting season for the Clemson Tigers, as they return majority of last year's explosive team that won 10 games and reached a BCS bowl. They also bring in a recruiting class that includes 17 talented prospects from the 2012 class.

The 2013 class has gotten off to a much faster start, as the Tigers have already landed 11 recruits. That includes the No. 1 overall recruit in Robert Nkemdiche, who shocked the entire college football world and picked the Tigers over every other top school in the country.

With many other key players on Clemson's radar, here are some of the latest updates on your 2012 Tigers.

Adrian Baker Likes Clemson

1 of 5

Clemson is trying to load up on the defensive side of the ball, and 4-star cornerback Adrian Baker could be the next big fish to become a Tiger. At 6'1", 165 pounds, Barker has room to increase his build, but he is a long athlete who has terrific ball skills. He can also play numerous positions in the secondary and the offensive side of the ball if needed.

He has more than 20 offers on the table, but has a few particular schools in mind.

"The ones I'm focusing on the most are Ohio State, Oklahoma, Clemson, Vanderbilt, and Florida State," Baker said, via Scout.com.

His favorite currently is Ohio State, but we have already learned that it is never wise to count out this feisty Clemson team.

Will Sammy Watkins Miss Playing Time?

2 of 5

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins proved to be one of the more explosive players in the country. As a freshman last season, he hauled in 82 passes for 1,219 yards and 12 touchdowns. Even bigger things are expected of him in his sophomore year, but he got into a little trouble during the offseason, getting arrested for drug possession.

Now, according to the Post and Courier, head coach Dabo Swinney says there is a great possibility the Tigers will be without their star receiver for some time:

"

Is there a chance he doesn’t miss any time? Probably not. Swinney said. I’m not going to make any decision until we get closer to playing time, and the main reason for that is Sammy has a process he has to deal with; some things he has to fulfill this summer.

"

Clemson has a big matchup in week one against the Auburn Tigers. If he is not suited up for that game, Watkins may have hurt more than just himself with that arrest back in May.

Montravius Adams Will Take a Trip to Clemson

3 of 5

Montravius Adams is considered by many to be one of the best defensive players in the 2013 class, and certainly the best defensive tackle. At 6'3", 285 pounds and with his athletic ability, Adams has the potential to step onto the field right now and become a force to deal with. There simply aren't many players that get off the ball the way he does.

While Adams has already checked out schools such as Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee, he plans to checkout Clemson as well.

“I just want to see if I feel like I’m at home, just hanging out with the players, seeing how they live up there, spending more time with the coaches,” Adams told Scout.com.

Let's also not forget that Adams said Clemson was a school that was recruiting him the hardest, and he really likes what they are doing right now.

The Tigers have already landed one 5-star recruit. Do they have another?

Derrick Green a Tiger?

4 of 5

Derrick Green is one of the top running back prospects this class has to offer. Out of Richmond, VA, Green is a thick running back at 5'11", 220 pounds. He is not the fastest running back in the world, but good luck bringing this guy down.

The 4-star back has offers from every top school in the country, but there is one school he is real high on his list. According Ryan Bartow of TigerIllustrated.com (via Rivals), Green said:

"

I could go on and on about (Clemson). The first time I went there it was beautiful. I had a good time. Coach Venables, their tight ends coach (Danny Pearman) and coach (Dabo) Swinney are all great. (Quarterbacks) coach (Chad) Morris runs a great offense. He told me all of the ways they are going to utilize me and how I'd play right away. We talked about the depth chart.

"

Green went on to say that he doesn't quite have a leader yet, but Clemson is one school that he knows for sure that will receive an official visit.

The Tigers the Favorite for DeMarcus Robinson?

5 of 5

Wide receiver DeMarcus Robinson is a big target at 6'2", 200 pounds. He is a long body, has a great combination of speed and strength, runs excellent routes and has great hands.

He has offers from every school imaginable and recently took a trip to Clemson following a visit to Florida.

Whatever happened down there must have worked, because according to 247sports.com, the Tigers are the new favorite for the 4-star wideout.
