Germany vs. Italy: 4 Reasons Azzurri Are Primed for Massive Upset

History tells us that Germany is going to be in trouble in Thursday's semi finals matchup against Italy. Most teams would be shaking in their cleats going into this game, but the Azzurri have the talent and the overflowing confidence for a massive upset.

Azzurri midfielder Andrea Pirlo believes that Germany is afraid since they still have the dark cloud of the 2006 World Cup semi-final hovering over them.

Even with history on Italy's side, Germany won't roll over because of the faults of their past. Before these two powerhouses clash, here's a rundown why Italy is primed to pull off an upset. 

History Is on Italy's Side

In the past seven matches against these two teams, Italy reigns supreme. Germany hasn't been able to get over the hump and win a single game against Italy in that span.

The most bitter loss for Germany came in the 2006 World Cup semi-finals match, as Italy won 2-0 after extra time.

Although it may seem like that goose egg for Germany has no bearing on Thursday's game, it's certainly in the back of their minds. 

Andrea Pirlo Smells Fear

Andrea Pirlo creates beautiful passes thanks to his great vision on the field, but his ability to see the fear in the Germans truly makes him a special talent.

In a recent article by Richard Aikman from Krakow, Pirlo said,

Resilience

Italy hasn't exactly trounced their opponents so far in this tournament by piling on the goals, but they always find away to grind it out and come out on top. Their most recent victory over England came down to crucial penalties.

They have struggled to get their wins, which makes this team a scary opponent to play against. Even when they are counted out of games, Italy buckles down and simply gets the job done through sheer toughness. 

Gianluigi Buffon

Gianluigi Buffon is one of the world's best goalkeepers and has the championship pedigree to prove it.

He is a veteran goalie who has won multiple titles with Juventus. Also, many believe he was the primary reason why Italy won the World Cup in 2006.

With Buffon patrolling the goal, Italy will be safe from harm against Germany.

He understand the team's position and who they're going up against, but just like Pirlo, he has a strong belief this team can come away with the victory.
