Wimbledon 2012: 4 Reasons Even Non-Tennis Fans Should Tune in
Wimbledon is one of the greatest spectacles in all of sports. It brings some of the best athletes in the world together.
It's true, tennis is not as popular in America as basketball, football, baseball or even hockey, but even for a non-tennis fan, this can be an exciting event. America loves competition and witnessing victory. Therefore, this event is perfect for any fan of any sport.
Tennis places two competitors against each other with only a net between them. They try to hit the ball as hard as they can and as accurately as they can to come out on top.
This isn't a sales pitch, it is merely a set of reasons as to why anyone could fall in love with tennis at Wimbledon.
A Possible Nadal-Djokovic Rematch
1 of 4This is one of the biggest developing rivalries in the sport.
Rafael Nadal versus Novak Djokovic was the matchup that ended the French Open just two short weeks ago.
They are the world's No. 1 and No. 2 players, and are household names for even the average sports fan.
Djokovic is the reigning champion of tennis' oldest tournament and will look to defend his title, but Nadal will have something to say about that. The Spaniard is a two-time champion of the prestigious event, winning it once in 2008 and again in 2010.
Nadal proved himself to be the favorite at Wimbledon after defeating the Djoker in four sets at the French Open. Nadal has 11 Grand Slam titles under his belt and looks to add one more by winning at Wimbledon.
Djokovic is relatively new to stardom in the tennis scene, but he is no stranger to winning. Although he has less than half that number of Grand Slam titles, he is the top player in the world and has been on fire for the past two years.
In that time frame, Djokovic has won four of his five Grand Slams, making him an instant superstar.
Look for them to match up in the Wimbledon final this year.
Roger Federer Is the Underdog
2 of 4Roger Federer is another one of the top players in the world, yet he finds himself as an underdog in the tournament.
Every sports fan loves an underdog, and Federer is no different.
Federer is a veteran of the tournament. He has won an astounding six Wimbledon titles in the past nine years. Therefore, it's safe to say Federer knows his way around.
This is just another case of a dominant athlete who is aging in a sport that is getting younger. Federer is the least talked about between himself, Nadal and Djokovic. He has essentially been written off by experts, and many believe that the final is basically set.
However, Federer is not one to give up. He knows he is getting older, while Nadal and Djokovic are younger versions of himself in the sport that he loves. He also knows that he has the talent to win his seventh Wimbledon title at the ripe age of 30.
Federer has won an impressive 16 Grand Slam tournaments and everyone knows he's not done.
Expect the former world No. 1 to make a run at the championship, and don't be surprised if he takes home the hardware and leave the younger guys taking notes.
Serena Williams in Contention
3 of 4Everyone knows who the Williams sisters are, but not too many non-tennis fans know who's still standing at Wimbledon.
There's no doubt that they are a pleasure to watch. The Williams sisters have taken tennis by storm since they first burst onto the scene in 1998. Serena has been the more successful singles player of the two thus far, but Venus has had her share of success as well.
Venus has won a total of nine singles Grand Slams, but is already a spectator after being knocked out at Wimbledon on Day 2.
Meanwhile, Serena will be under the microscope. Many experts believe that her best days are behind her. She hasn't won a Grand Slam title in two years and has seen Maria Sharapova take over the top spot in the world.
Having said that, with Serena being one of the most feared women's tennis players of all time, there is a good chance she will be victorious.
It won't be a successful final if Serena Williams isn't participating.
Witnessing Tennis' Biggest Event
4 of 4The Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the World Series, the Stanley Cup Finals and Wimbledon—I know the latter isn't talked about as much, but all of them are the biggest events of their respective sport.
Wimbledon is what every tennis player prepares for throughout the year. Hundreds of players partake in the festivities at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, but there is only a total of eight winners in singles and doubles play.
There aren't too many individual sports that receive as much attention as tennis.
This is the only major that is still played on grass, the surface that the sport was originally played on. There are seven rounds of play that end in a championship match between the top two players, just like in any other sports bracket.
People all around the world will be tuning in to see this spectacle take place. Avid tennis fans will be on the edge of their seats as the finals approach.
This tournament can make a tennis fan out of anyone who likes good competition.
