Manchester United Transfer News: Red Devils Continue to Pursue James Rodriguez

After being linked to Porto winger James Rodriguez earlier in the transfer window, Manchester United have continued their increase chase for the 20-year-old, who would be a welcome addition to Old Trafford.

According to the Daily Mail, United are continuing to pursue the midfielder and see Rodriguez as an excellent attacking option for next season—regardless of whether Nani stays or goes at the club.

It was originally thought that Rodriguez could replace Nani when doubts were raised about his future at Manchester United. Now it seems that the Red Devils want to try and sign the youngster regardless of whether Nani remains at the club or not.

If he does stay, it would provide United with further depth in midfield and up front. If he leaves, he becomes an instant replacement for the winger and softens the blow that United otherwise would have felt.

Reports are emerging throughout Portugal and online that Porto rejected a £30 million offer from United for Rodriguez—trying to hold out for the full £40 million that the winger agreed to in a buy-out clause in a five-year contract he signed at the club last year.

The youngster does appear to be one of United's top priorities in the transfer window and with Luka Modric potentially being used in a player swap with Real Madrid, could be the Red Devils' most realistic chance at landing another strong attacking player.

Even if they do continue to pursue him, United will have to dig deep for Rodriguez and will have to make it worth the Primeira League champions' worthwhile to let him go. 

Then the question becomes not whether United need him in their squad next season, but whether he's worth the £40 million or more that the Red Devils may have to offer in order to secure his signature.

I'm just not sure if he's worth the £40 million yet.
