NBA Trade Rumors: Cavaliers and Bobcats Would Both Benefit from Draft Pick Swap

Austin GreenJun 1, 2018

In a deal that would pay off for both teams, the Charlotte Bobcats and Cleveland Cavaliers are engaging in talks about swapping draft picks, according to Steve Kyler of HoopsWorld.

The Bobcats have the No. 2 pick in the draft, but they have multiple needs and know that one prospect—be it Thomas Robinson or Michael Kidd-Gilchrist—won't be enough to rescue them from last season's 7-59 debacle.

That's where the Cleveland Cavaliers come in.

The Cavs have four draft picks (fourth, 24th, 33rd and 34th) this season, but with a roster that's only a couple pieces away from making the playoffs, they don't want to bring four rookies into camp. They're also obsessed with Florida shooting guard Bradley Beal, who will likely be snatched up by the Washington Wizards at No. 3 if everyone stays put.

According to Kyler's sources, the Cavs have offered the fourth and 24th pick in exchange for Charlotte's top selection. If the Bobcats can also get one of Cleveland's second-round picks, they should definitely pull the trigger.

This would be a win-win scenario for both teams, and that phrase doesn't come up often when discussing these two franchises.

The Cavaliers would get Beal, and paired with reigning Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving, the Cavs would have one of the most dynamic young backcourts in NBA history. Beal is an explosive athlete with a gorgeous shooting stroke, and Irving proved last season that he is capable of being the best point guard in the league one day.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats could add either MKG or Robinson at No. 4, then package some of their remaining picks to move into the teens or pick up a proven veteran. The Bobcats already own the 31st pick, and if this trade goes through, they will have multiple assets that will be intriguing to potential trade partners.

The No. 2 pick in the draft is a valuable commodity, so Charlotte may receive a better offer in the coming days. If they don't, this offer from the Cavs is certainly a solid option.
