US Olympic Trials 2012: Monday Event Schedule, TV Info, Preview and More

Jessica MarieJun 7, 2018

On tap for Monday's Olympic trials is more track and field action, as well as the event that everyone has been waiting for. Swimming is one of the events that Americans wait to see at every summer Olympics because of one person.

That is, Michael Phelps.

It's hard to believe that so much drama has encapsulated his life since his last gold medal run in 2008, when he took home eight pieces of prime hardware. Now is his chance to truly redeem himself.

Swimmer to Watch: Jessica Hardy

Hardy's story in the 2008 Olympics was one of extremely bad luck. According to her website, she found out after making the Olympic team that she had tested positive for a banned stimulant and was forced to withdraw.

An arbitration panel later determined that the positive test came from the consumption of a contaminated natural supplement, but the damage was already done, and Hardy was suspended for one year.

When she returned to the pool in 2009, she set three world records. Now, she's ready for more in London. On Sunday, Hardy told the Steve Beideck of the World-Herald (via Omaha.com):

"

I am remembering the good times, making the Olympic team and that euphoric feeling and really grateful for that experience. I feel like it taught me a lot having gone through that. But obviously I have a lot of traumatic feelings being back, working through those, trying to calm down.

"

Hardy will participate this week in the 50-meter freestyle, the 100 breaststroke, the 100 free and the 100 butterfly.

Top Trials Storyline: Ashton Eaton's World Record

The Oregon grad broke the world record in the men's decathlon on Saturday, finishing the event with 9,039 points over two days to beat Roman Sebrle's mark, which was set 11 years ago.

According to ESPN, Eaton needed to run the 1,500 in four minutes and 16.37 seconds to break the record. He ran it in four minutes and 14.48 seconds.

After, he told ESPN.com: "I wanted it to be a special event because this is my home state, my hometown, my home university. And just from the start, I just wanted to perform well."

Now, Eaton will have the chance to go for the gold in London.
