Rafael Nadal: Rafa Will Be Boosted by More Than Confidence in 2012 Wimbledon

David DanielsJun 24, 2012

No one is above improvement.

Going into the 2012 season, Rafael Nadal boasted 10 Grand Slam singles championships. But the legendary career that he crafted didn’t inflate Nadal’s ego to the point that he was too good to change. Coming off his seventh French Open victory, he will be in position to prove that he’s better than ever at Wimbledon.

Renewed confidence is what most fans believe is the fuel to Rafa’s resurgence. Novak Djokovic dominated him for the better portion of a year as the Serbian defeated Nadal in the Finals of three of his four 2011/2012 grand slam titles. But while Rafa’s three-straight wins against Djokovic surely boost his confidence against the World’s No. 1 player going into a potential grudge match in London, a change in his game is what triggered the end to his drought vs. Djoker.

Simon Briggs of the Daily News & Analysis reported that Nadal’s coach, mentor and uncle, Toni Nadal tweaked with his nephew’s game. He said:

"

When we finished the 2011 season, I talked with him for making some changes in his game. First I want that he make a change in his racket with more weight because we need a little more power in the decisive shot to finish the point. In 2011, Rafa hadn't made enough winners. We also made some changes in his movement. Not his movement around the court, but his movement through the ball. I wanted more bounce in his legs. These were important things to change, and I remember in the first game at the Australian Open, he hit many, many winners. It was a good sign.

"

Rafa was a force to be reckoned with before he ran into the wall that was Djokovic last year, but with improved power and technique, expect his 2012 success to continue at the All England Club.
