5 Players That Could Help Phoenix Suns Recover from Last Season

Roberto PayneJun 7, 2018

The Phoenix Suns are coming off a second consecutive non-playoff season and desperately need to add an infusion of talent to the roster. Whether it be through the draft with a shooting guard like Austin Rivers or even free agency with O.J. Mayo or Deron Williams; something needs to be done.

Read on for 5 players who could help the Phoenix Suns forget about the last two seasons and look forward to upcoming seasons.

Donte Green

1 of 5

The Suns have little talent at small forward on the roster, and could use an infusion of youth. Donte Green would be perfect for the team and should be a bargain signing.

Green has never gotten his legs in his four seasons with the Sacramento Kings but the physical gifts are definitely present, as Green is listed at 6'11" and 226 lbs.

His length and size could make him a dynamite defender and his growth as a scorer would help the team out dramatically. Green wouldn't cost more then $3 or 4 million for a one year deal and would be a good signing for Phoenix.

Austin Rivers

The Phoenix Suns hold the 13th overall draft selection in this year's draft and reports have the team looking at wing depth. The team has even reportedly promised to draft SG Dion Waiters.

While Waiters has been shooting up draft boards and could be gone by the 13th pick, Austin Rivers might be available when the Suns pick.

Rivers has star written all over him and his offensive skills are greatly needed by the team. At the NBA Draft Combine, Rivers measured in at 6'5" in shoes and quieted rumors that he was too small to play shooting guard.

If Rivers is available when the Suns pick, the team should take a good hard look at him.

O.J. Mayo

3 of 5

O.J. Mayo is a restricted free agent but it seems like the Memphis Grizzlies are willing to let the former 3rd overall pick, thus opening the door for the Phoenix Suns to make a run at him.

Mayo has shown the ability to score in bunches and should be in demand come the start of free agency on July 1st. The Suns could offer him immediate playing time and a chance to shine in a fast paced offense.

The team might not contend in the next couple years, but Mayo could sign a two year deal and revive his career by posting superior statistics in the desert.

Aaron Brooks

Aaron Brooks was traded to the Phoenix Suns from the Houston Rockets during the 2010-11 season but signed to play in China and missed all of last season. Brooks was the backup to Steve Nash for a quarter of the season and played sporadically.

Even with his inconsistent play, there's no doubting his talent and his desire to improve. Brooks is a dynamic scorer, when getting playing time, and could step in to a bigger role if Nash signs elsewhere this offseason.

Phoenix could sign him to a one year deal to see how he performs with consistent minutes before committing long term.

Deron Williams

5 of 5

Deron Williams is the biggest and best free agent in this year's offseason and rumors have the Phoenix Suns as a strong possibility.

Just yesterday, ESPN NBA Insider Chris Broussard said, "The Phoenix Suns are probably the only other team with enough cap room to offer Williams a maximum contract that can get in the mix for him." and "The weather and golf (Williams is a huge golf guy) is great, the offense is free-flowing (something Williams is definitely looking for) and with him, the team could be on the rise."

Williams would immediately fill the void left if Steve Nash signs elsewhere and become the face of the franchise. Signing Williams would be huge for the franchise and management will reportedly go hard after him this offseason.
