Orlando Magic Officially Name Rob Hennigan GM

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

The Orlando Magic have stolen some of Oklahoma City's thunder as they have announced they will be making Thunder assistant GM Rob Hennigan their next general manager. The Magic tweeted out the news.

"

— Orlando Magic (@Orlando_Magic) June 20, 2012"

This move is certainly not a shock. CBS Sports' Ken Berger had previously reported that Hennigan was one of three finalists for the job.

Also, he has been a part of the wildly successful Thunder, who have rapidly turned their team from a bottom-dweller into an NBA finalist. It is natural that their front office would be raided while others try to emulate their success.

Hennigan, 30, is completing his fourth season with the Thunder. Prior to that he worked with the Spurs for five seasons, where he started as an intern.

His first two years with the Thunder were as the team's Director of College/International Player Personnel. He made the jump to assistant GM in 2010.

Despite his youth and inexperience, this is an excellent hire for the Magic. Hennigan has learned the ropes while spending his time in two of the smartest franchises in the game. He was impressive enough to climb the ranks from intern to assistant GM in just nine years.

Both the Thunder and Spurs have largely chosen to build their team through the draft with talented and hard-working players. Magic fans can expect a similar strategy.

Of course, Hennigan will have more than the draft to worry about in Orlando, as there is the little matter of what to do with Dwight Howard. That is a lot for an inexperienced GM to handle, but Magic fans have every reason to believe Hennigan will handle it in the most advantageous way.
