MLB Trade Rumors: Blue Jays Would Be Wise to Pull Trigger on Jeremy Guthrie Deal

Richard LangfordJun 2, 2018

Colorado Rockies right-hander Jeremy Guthrie is reportedly on the market, and that is a market the Toronto Blue Jays most definitely need to be a part of.

The Blue Jays have recently endured an insane amount of pitching injuries, with starters Brandon Morrow, Kyle Drabek and Drew Hutchison all suffering injuries that have landed them on the disabled list.

This has wisely led them to Guthrie, according to FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal:

While no deal appears imminent, the teams have discussed an exchange that would send Guthrie to the Jays, according to major-league sources.

The Jays likely would assume a significant portion of Guthrie’s remaining salary – just under $5 million – in exchange for a lesser prospect, possibly Double A first baseman Mike McDade, sources said.

The Blue Jays need to make this deal imminent.

Guthrie is certainly not a dominant pitcher. He is 33, and has 3-6 record with a 7.02 ERA this season. But he is competent and can eat up some serious innings.

Given their recent injuries to their starting pitchers and the fact that they are 4.5 games behind the Orioles for the A.L.'s wild card spot, this isn't a move that would vault them into playoff contention.

It is still one they should make. Toronto would not be sacrificing a big piece of their future to land him, and in making this trade, it will send a message through the whole organization that they are committed to winning.

This is a young and talented team. It is important that they establish the right kind of attitude and competitive drive.
