3. Bastian Schweinsteiger
Bastian Schweinsteiger was Germany’s best playmaker in their first three games. He’s one of just eight players to record multiple assists in Euro 2012. Both of his assists came in a 2-1 win over the Netherlands, which kept the Germans undefeated.
If Schweinsteiger continues to set up his teammates like he has been, Greece will be in for a long day.
2. Giorgos Karagounis
In a must-win match against Russia, Giorgos Karagounis rose to the occasion. He launched home the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win to carry the Greeks to the quarterfinals. According to ESPN, Karagounis said after the triumph:
“Today's saga is something comparable to what happened in Portugal. We are a new team—a renewed team—and we managed to qualify against everything. I really mean that.”
While what Greece accomplished is impressive, they’ll need more magic from Karagounis to advance further in the championship.
1. Mario Gomez
Mario Gomez has been Germany’s MVP up to this point in the tournament. He’s one of only three players on any team to score three goals. Without his effort, there’s no way that the Germans would be in the position that they are today.
His ability to put a dent in the scoreboard once again will determine whether or not Germany breezes through Greece or is forced to fight for their European Championship lives.
