Chelsea FC: Why Roberto Di Matteo Was the Right Choice as Manager

Greg ProbertJun 7, 2018

Chelsea have finally made the decision that most fans were waiting for: Roberto Di Matteo has been given a contract to be the Blues' manager.

It's not a long-term contract as such, but a two-year deal gives Di Matteo ample time to stamp his authority on the position and show what he is made of.

Di Matteo worked wonders at Chelsea after picking up the reins following Andre Villas-Boas' disastrous tenure as manager.

In the short time he was in charge, he managed to bag the FA Cup and also deliver the "holy grail" to Roman Abramovich—the Champions League trophy.

No manager in Chelsea's 107-year history has managed to conquer Europe, but yet there was still some indecisiveness over whether Di Matteo would be offered the job.

Abramovich is always looking for big names to join Chelsea, and Pep Guardiola was reportedly on his radar.

But the fact remains that Di Matteo turned Chelsea from the worst they have looked since Abramovich took over to a team that defeated the best teams on the continent.

He has the players playing hard and has made Fernando Torres relevant.

Adding to all this the fact that the players like him, he is a Chelsea legend and he is the fans' No. 1 choice.

The players are just getting used to life under Di Matteo and to bring in another big-name manager will surely only be detrimental to the players' performances...case in point, Andre Villas-Boas.

It could turn out that Di Matteo isn't ready for the job, but from what I have seen, he is ready for the role and Chelsea can begin to build some stability around him.
