Liverpool Transfer News: Landing Gylfi Sigurdsson Would Be Huge Addition

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

The clock is ticking and now is the time for Liverpool to become aggressive in landing midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson from Hoffenheim.

Ben Smith of the BBC is reporting that a deal between the two parties could be completed by next week as the 22-year-old has privately expressed interest to join the club and specifically new coach Brendan Rodgers, who was his coach this past season at Swansea.

The report states that Liverpool will pay the £6.8m fee Swansea agreed upon last month.

While a deal appears to be imminent, The Dailymail has reported there will be a deadline of June 30 for a deal to be made.

Hoffenheim head coach (and former Liverpool defender) Markus Babbel sounds like he is going to do everything in his power to ensure this deal is able to happen (via Dailymail):

"

Gylfi wants to stay in England and is in negotiations there. It makes no sense for both sides for him to return to Hoffenheim, perhaps only for a few days. If, by the deadline on June 30, he has done nothing then he will return to his preseason with us. We have agreed this with him.

"

Sigurdsson is still under contract with Hoffenheim for the next two seasons, but played for Swansea after falling down the depth chart. In 19 appearances, he scored seven goals, which were more than enough to suggest he has a bright future ahead of him.

Rodgers has been rather open about his interest in Sigurdsson, and the move makes plenty of sense for both parties involved considering how familiar they are with each other.

The Icelandic has fantastic feet and has shown the ability to shoot from all sides of the field. He is at his best as a playmaker and has shown terrific vision and decision-making skills at such a young age.

The Reds didn’t have a ton of success with their midfielders last season, and landing a young and rather inexpensive talent like Sigurdsson is the best move to make right now.
