Report: CM Punk Almost Lost WWE Title at No Way Out

Imaan JalaliJun 7, 2018

Not since John Cena has a wrestler carried the WWE title for more consecutive days than CM Punk.

"The Voice of the Voiceless," who is quickly approaching the 215-day mark, has built an incredible amount of momentum as a champion who takes on all challengers.

It just so happens that since December 2011, Punk has successfully defended his reign from one foe to the next.

While much of Punk's surge can be attributed to the man behind the character, it would be all for naught if the WWE writing team wasn't also behind him.

According to LordsOfPain.net (via the members-only section of F4WOnline.com), however, the powers that be nearly had a change of heart regarding Punk's future as WWE champion:

"

For the second pay-per-view in a row, WWE officials reportedly came close to putting the WWE Title on Daniel Bryan. Bryan almost went over CM Punk at WWE's Over the Limit pay-per-view and was discussed as the potential winner at No Way Out.

"

Although it's nice to know that the WWE believes in Daniel Bryan as much as the audience does, it would be foolishly premature to strip Punk of a feat that doesn't come around very often.

In a day and age where championships have lost their luster, now is the perfect time to highlight Punk's extended run atop the company.

As a result, not only would fans become hyper-aware of Punk's winning streak, but they will start to wonder who might be the one to vanquish the Chicago native.

Once the anticipation of a title change reaches a fever pitch, the WWE can and should take advantage of the situation to create a new star.

That doesn't include Bryan, who is already one of the WWE's premier headliners.
