Euro 2012: TV Info, Previews and Predictions for Final Day of Group Play

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

The Euro 2012 group stage comes to an end today with the conclusion of Group D. France and England, the group favorites heading into the tournament, are currently tied atop the table with four points. Ukraine still has a chance to advance with three points while Sweden has been eliminated.

Aside from Ukraine's victory over Sweden in the opener, which was fueled by home-field advantage, Group D has played out pretty much as everybody expected it to. The top teams still have some work to do before they move on to the knockout rounds, however.

Here's a look at all the important information for Tuesday's matches followed by previews and predictions for each of the games.

England vs. Ukraine

England appeared destined for an early exit when Olof Mellberg gave Sweden a 2-1 lead in the last match, but give credit to the Three Lions for fighting back to earn all three points. Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck were the heroes.

While they haven't been playing a flashy style under new manager Roy Hodgson, the Three Lions are still finding ways to accumulate points. The return of Wayne Rooney should provide a much-needed boost to the team's attack.

They should expect a tough test from co-host Ukraine. Led by veteran captain Andriy Shevchenko and raucous fan support, the team will enter its clash with England with nothing to lose, and that makes them extremely dangerous.

France did expose some weaknesses along the Zbirna back line. If the Three Lions are going to avoid the upset, they must do the same. Ultimately, England will likely play it safe since they only need a draw, leading to a draw.

Prediction: England 1, Ukraine 1

Sweden vs. France

Sweden has held a lead in the second half of both games so far and proceeded to let them both slip away. That type of play simply isn't good enough in a marquee event like Euro 2012, so the Blagult have nobody to blame but themselves.

It all comes down to the play in the defensive third. When opponents started putting the heat on late, Sweden wasn't able to protect a lead. That doesn't bode well heading into a match against France's multiple dangerous attackers.

Jeremy Menez and Yohan Cabaye scored for Les Bleus in their last game, and there are at least three or four other players who can beat you on any given night. It's that depth that makes France one of the top contenders to win the tournament.

Even though France only needs a draw to secure advancement, they should have a big enough edge over Sweden to cruise to an easy victory and assure itself the top spot in the group. It would also keep the team's momentum alive.

Prediction: France 2, Sweden 0
