Webb Simpson: US Open Victory Will Propel Career to New Heights

Ian HanfordJun 7, 2018

Webb Simpson's four-year PGA Tour career took a favorable turn Sunday evening with his victory in the US Open.

A win in one of golf's majors will give Simpson automatic credibility and provide him with a building block moving forward.

Entering competition at the Olympic Club, Simpson was the furthest thing from a household name. Many viewers were probably confused who this Simpson was. He didn't look like Bart, Lisa, Maggie, Homer or Marge.

But golf fans will know his name, and face, now.

Let's see why this victory will launch him to higher peaks in his PGA Tour career.

More Accomplished Than You May Realize

Simpson is still in the fledgling stages of his professional career, but that doesn't mean the 26-year-old cannot golf.

He was a three-time All American at Wake Forest, the ACC Player of the Year in 2008 and a winner of the Arnold Palmer Scholarship. His decorated collegiate career earned him a spot on the 2007 Walker Cup team.

In 2011, he nearly won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Transitions Championship, but he faltered down the stretch.

So it's not like Simpson can't play. He isn't necessarily accomplished professionally, but he understands how to play the game.

After his first taste of major victory, he will only get better.

Momentum

Momentum can play a vital role in the success of an athlete. Look for Simpson to ride his momentum for the foreseeable future.

Everything is going in his favor. He just had his first child (James) last year, and he just won one of golf's most glorious tournaments on an extremely difficult course.

Right now, I'm sure he is on cloud nine.

Watching Simpson play Round 4 on Sunday, he didn't seem like a guy who's easily rattled. He stayed calm under pressure and ran down Jim Furyk when it mattered the most.

The ice in his veins will prove useful throughout his career, but especially in the events immediately following his US Open victory.

Picking golf's next star isn't easy. Following Tiger Woods' demise, no one has taken the torch and run with it.

Simpson will be the next to attempt the enviable feat, and I expect him to succeed.
